Why... should you as a mother encourage your son to meet his father, unless the fater was abusive or did something outright awful I think its important for a child to see the other parent. WHatever is going on between you and your ex husband or the father of the child should NOT envolve the child at all, |

When a child is the age of sixteen (16) it is totally up to him if he wants to meet his father or not and no way should he be forced to.
Down the road when he gets older he just may decide he wants to meet his father but until then it is all up to him, that is the way the law stands in any country that I know of and it should be that way.

The father is on the right side of law, as the boy is sub-adult ie less than 18. But the boy cannot be compelled to meet the father.

At 16 years of age the child has the right to see whom he wants and not see those that he doesn't want to see.
The court must take that into account when deciding upon visitation rights. |

If the father is actively seeking a relationship with his son, he should be given the opportunity to establish one. Unless there is emotional or physical effects happening as a result of their time together, I don't think there's anything wrong with this.
If the son is really hesitant, then maybe the meetings should happen with a councilor to start.
I'm sensing the son maybe hesitant about seeing his father because he's watching his mother be hurt by a messy divorce. |

Well, you say the courts ar pressuring him, Putting pressure on a child to meet his father is completely different then ordering him to.
If there is no order stating he must meet his father, then i don't see why he has to. |

Try to talk with the father. If a child is forced to meet a father when he isn't ready, he will not be prepared and may forever hate the father. I worked in a law firm and we had this happen more often than you'd think. It will likely be worse for the child and father relationship if one party is forced to meet the other, or even visit with the other. However, it would also help if you would talk to the child and explain that you realize that he is no longer a child....that he has heard a lot of things growing up but that those things were done to you by the father and not to him. Even if you hate the father, and have reason to, for the sake of your son, put up a good face and just let him know that you will be there for him whatever his decision is. |
