The lawyer said as long as I hold a key I must pay her rent. The home is in both our names and paid off.

No, you don't have to pay her rent unless there is a written contract. If your stuff is there and your name is on the mortgage then you don't owe her anything. As long as both of your names are on that mortgage and you helped pay for that house then no, absolutely not. You do not owe her rent whatsoever. |

I'm not really sure what the answer to this question is, but here's what I think you should do: If you have your stuff still in the house, get it out. Then give her back the key. That way none of your stuff is there and you don't have access to it. I don't see why you should have to pay rent to this woman just because you have a key - as I've said, I really think you need to get your own lawyer instead of trusting hers because her lawyer works for HER, and is trying to get HER all the money he can. So yeah....definetely get your own lawyer, and do what your lawyer says!

If the home is in both of your names and paid off, you don't owe her anything. Get another lawyer that knows what's they are talking about. That's YOUR home too just as much as hers! |

It doesn't sound right. Check with your own lawyer. If you aren't living there you aren't using the property and should not have to pay rent. |
