I got married in a very private affair but neither of us had a license just the certificate from the preacher. I was wondering if there was any way that I could get our marriage recognized by the state of Georgia? I tried taking the certificate to the courthouse but they said that we would need a license or they couldn't put it into record. The Preacher that performed the marriage short after the event and the only person that remembers us getting married December 25, 2002 is us and our witness. What can I do? My husband has been gone for a long time and is finally coming home soon and I want something done before he gets here. Please help me.

Well you need that marriage certificate for your marriage to be legal. Go get one, then give it to the preacher that officiated your wedding. He should be the one to submit it in your county. Before he submit the marriage certificate make sure your two witness signed their name too (you will see it in your marriage certificate,two witness required). You will have to choose a different date of your wedding since you got the marriage certificate after you already got married. There would be a validation date-expiration date for that marriage certificate. Goodluck. |

You can't get a marriage certificate if you aren't legally married, and since you didn't have a license to marry you aren't legally married...
The only way to change it is to actually get married. Legally, the right way, with all the necessary forms completed. |

Why not just get a license? I'm pretty sure you'll need your husband's presence for that, though. |

You can do what you should have done to start with. Follow the proper legal procedure to get married.
You go to the courthouse, get a license, have an official accept your vows, then submit the completed license back to the courthouse.
You will need your husband to go with you to the courthouse. |

Nope...you gotta have the license! It's part of the laws of marriage. You should have done it right the first time, now you have to do it all over again - legally this time. |

It sounds like you waited too late to ask this - you should have done it before the ceremony. I cannot imagine anyone not knowing they must have a marriage license or a preacher that would perform a ceremony without a license. Legally you are not married. |
