I live in Florida. I am getting an amicable divorce. Do I have to pay child support ?

Whomever is the custodial parent,,(being the parent with which the child or children live with) the other must pay child support..The support can be as much as 50percent of the noncustodial parents income..Child support is just that,,monies used and needed to support the child or children's needs..Sadly,,sometimes, the custodial parent just uses the support monies for themselves, and the children are not given the full amount collected by the courts..Once an order for support is court issued,,it is deducted automatically each week from the paycheck and the state sends it to the custodial parent every two weeks..Your lawyers will settle on a prescribed figure which is acceptable to both of you..If you both can't settle,, the courts will make that decision for you both.. Amicable...well that means you both will agree to a settlement. She is going to want to remain in the life style she is accustom and expect "reasonable" child support, etc. There are charts and tables the state uses to determine the amount of child support is to be paid, based off your income. In your case, if this went before a judge and you've been married for some years, you'll probably be paying approx. $870.00 per month, per child. You'll also give her the house, a car and the furniture. At some point the child support could convert to alimony and continue for the rest of your life. Despite your intension of an "amicable" divorce, her definition of amicable might be "give me everything I think I deserve and want and you can have a divorce". It often becomes difficult for divorcing couples with children to agree on the financial arrangement. If I were you, I'd consult with a good divorce lawyer.

I love how people ask this like they're surprised they still have to support their kids. Yes, you have to pay. The courts will figure it out.

Of course you have to pay. Usually states have a formula that takes into account both parent's incomes. If they don't just remember the money is for the support and well-being of the kids, and make sure you aren't skimping on their needs.

Of course you have to pay child support. Just because you're splitting amicably doesn't mean you no longer have any financial responsibility to your child.

Support is based on a formula that takes into account income, number and ages of children, parenting time, etc. Your lawyer will be able to provide you with a close estimate of what you should be paying.

In California the state takes into account income, expenses, and who pays for the medical insurance. They have a standardized calculator and after recording all the pertinent information, the support amount is determined.
