No you can't force him to pay you back.

You may have to swallow this one if you can't find someone to take his place.

I am guessing that because he's your fiance, there was no agreement legally binding him to pay you. (If there was, I'd be worried!)

This happened to my cousin once, she bought a very expensive theatre ticket for her friend who promised she'd pay my cousin back. The friend then said she couldn't make it, and my poor cousin was left with the bill for the friend's ticket.

How important is it to keep him as your fiancee? If you make him foot the bill, he might not be happy with you about it. Was it his trip or a trip you planned for the two of you? He booked it, his problem. You planned it and booked it; your problem.

Well, you already bought the tickets and if he cant go with you then ask him if he'd have a problem if you still go and take someone else. Ask a girlfriend or your sister to go with you. Dont dissrespect him by taking a guyfriend. Have fun!

Was it a more of a surprise thing? If so you pay or find someone else to go. If you are going to lose a large part of the money it would probably be cheaper to take someone at half price.

If it was not a surprise or he has some last minute job thing he should pay.

You have to look at the cancellation fees and all of that. Maybe you won't lose all but pay cancellation. Maybe you might be able to shift it to another date and just pay a smallish fee. This all depends on how you bookedIf you booked the air tickets seperately they might give you a bigger credit that is worth more later than what you would lose by canceling outright.

Try as hard as you can to sell the trip even at a loss if possible. Then have him pay for the remaining balance.
