Nobody knows the answer to that question. We all want to think it is for life but now a days it is a different story. So much cheating going on. It is so easy to get a divorce. There are people out there that cannot communicate so instead of fixing it then just get a divorce. I think the only reasons why people should get a divorce is:
1. Any kind of abuse mental or physical
2. Cheating of any kind emotionally or physically
3. Any kind of addiction rather it be drugs, alcohol orgambling.
4. Stealing from the spouse or others in the family.
5. Not contributing with finances or helping around the house being a bum. |

I think that in the majority of cases yes. But when I married, little did I know that the man I married was a violent abusive bully who beat me mercilessly for 14 years. Despite that I stayed and I tried so hard to make it work. I tried to make him happy, but sadly it seemed he was never happy unless he was beating me. The day I found the courage to leave him was the day he held a knife to my eldest son's throat.
So, to all the people who spout the bible at me and tell me things like this: "There are no biblical grounds for divorce, period. Everyone keeps commenting on that "exception clause"...except for adultery or marital unfaithfulness." I believe the poster was janetrmi?
That comment makes me want to vomit. So there were no grounds for divorce when a man has beat me mercilessly and threatens the life of my children is there not? I think you need to wake up and smell what you're shovelling! |

Yes, I'm only getting married once and I know I'm marrying the right person. So yes, for me, marriage is for life. :-) |

Yes, I think that marriage is intended to be for life. Even in the vows of the ceremony it says, "till death do us part." That means you promise to be with that person until one of you dies. It doesn't always work out to be that way, but still it is intended to be for life. |

For me, it wasn't and I am still ALIVE and happy with my three children...You can move forward and still be okay if things donot last for life.... |

If you get married for the right reasons then yes, marriage is a lifelong committment. Why would you need anyone else if you married your soul mate to start with? |
|

HELEND
 |
yes it certainly is. I was with my partner for 15years b4 we got wed, and we have been through so much and our love is still strong. |

At one time I thought it was. But it seems to many people marry for the wrong reasons. When I got married I thought I would have a lifelong partner. I never thought my husband would become addicted to drugs and alcohol...that is a horrible environment when your raising small
children. I kept my marriage vows, but only because my husband passed away. I had every intention of getting a divorce. For those of you who think Marriage is for life with no exceptions, you are so wrong. |

It should be, but people change sometimes or we find out the person we married wasn't who we thought they were. In that case, then no. Why stay married to someone who isn't the same person you thought you'd married or who has changed into someone you don't want to be with? |

Yes. Who marries just to divorce?
Obviously if something major and horrible happened that would have to be dealt with then. |

Just remember that when marriage vows were first written, the average life expectancy was 30 years old. ; ) |

No.
Now I'd really like to have answered 'yes', but you have to have a sense of realism. A lot depends on what happens after the ceremony finishes. People do change. Sometimes you uncover aspects of your partner's behaviour that leave a lot to be desired. Sometimes work gets in the way. The really sad bit is when two people marry, raise kids but lose any other common interests. So when the kids leave the nest the parents find they have nothing in common any longer. |

That's the idea. Why else would "until death do us part" be in the vows? |

Yes or what is the point of getting married if it is not for life |
|

teenie
 |
In my opinion it should be but with everyone cheating on each other there is no way you can make a marriage like that work.
Unless your in the very small 10 % of a good and decent marriage where the two of you talk your problems out before it escalates into a full blown affair your marriage is the exceptsom and will last a life time. |
