Is all this medicine safe for my 7 year old step son?

My son was 5 & taking asthma inhaler, singulair, claritin, and a steroid nasal spray. He took that stuff for about a year. It didn't seem right to me. I took him to an ear, nose & throat doctor. He got his adenoids removed & that helped his sinus infections. He no longer needed the nasal spray. He only has seasonal allergies & takes claritin during pollen season. He has not had problems with asthma for a while so I took a chance & stopped the steroid inhaler. He does still have albuterol on hand if he has a problem, but it's been over a year. I don't know first hand about Ritalin, but have had some friends discontinue it. I have heard some bad stuff about it. But without knowing him, I can't really say much. I've recently started going to a Natruopathic doctor. I like the concept of natural medicine. I do understand about not wanting your child to be sick & suffer. It also doesn't seem right to me to double up on medicine for a little kid. I personally like to get by with as few medicines as possible.

"She" isn't writing a prescription for these meds, the dr is. Some of it is preventative for asthma, which is why his asthma is better. You don't stop the meds when the child gets better, or they'll get worse again.

If it weren't safe, the dr wouldn't give it to him. Do you think this child's mother would do anything to harm him? She loves him.

You don't seem to know much about medication or asthma. You could educate yourself, or ask to go to the dr next time so you're better informed.

You could also trust that a well-educated dr knows more than you, and accept that this child's mother is doing the right thing for her child whom she loves.

EDIT: Occasionally children die from asthma. That can be the consequence of refusing to treat asthma/ allergies aggressively. Singulair and Zrytec are for allergies. I take both, for particularly stubborn allergies. They work in different ways.

obviously if his doctor gave it to him, he needs to take it and it's fine. butt out. the mom and dad wouldn't do anything to harm i'm sure.

ritalin is fine to take with allergy meds. You have to realize his dr. should know all the meds. he's taking. Dont know why he'd need singulair and zyrtec. Why dont you ask her father to call and ask the dr?

Sounds like the norm for a child with allergies and asthma. Perhaps the asthma is not so bad anymore because he is on preventative meds.

I have no clue about the Ritalin, but I do feel it is over prescribed by doctors.

If you are concerned, you and your husband should accompany his mother to the next doctors appointment.

Apparently his doctor (and his mother) believes that it's safe, and that the benefits of the medication outweighs any risks there may be. Do you have a medical degree? I doubt it, and I doubt anyone on this forum does either.

Singulair usually takes care of a lot of the allergies. If this is what the doctor prescribed, then he needs to take them unless he sees another doctor who has another opinion. But, what are his allergies? Is he allergic to animals? Dust/dustmites? Mold or pollen? Has anyone tried to find out what he is allergic to? If he has not been on Singulair for too long, maybe it will eventually have more effect and help with the nasal allergies. It does that sometimes. The doctor would have to comment on the rest.

In my opinion it's extremely bad, I would always try alternative medicine first and if that didn't work, then I would use drugs.

But it's everyones choice, most people are uneducated about the safety of drugs and they don't realize just how effective natural cures are. People really should learn more so they can make better decisions.

Probably not, but since your not the mother, you have to abide what she says unless you and your husband can show a judge that all this nonsense is harming him and get a doctor to testify that his asthma is well controlled on one medicine and doesn't need all the other crap. By the way, I don't buy into the ADD crap diagnosis either, its just bratty behavior that some people cannot handle, rather than taking steps to control their own behavior they want to drug the kid to make their lives easier. There is no excuse for that.
