Illegal, no.....smart, no. Why don't divorce parents or any parents for that matter talk in private so their kids don't know all the issues they are having. It's tough when two people separate or divorce, on them and on their children......who they love! Speak up and ask them to speak in private or leave the house while they are talking about "adult stuff". |

I know that in California, it can be stated in the divorce decree that neither parent is allowed to talk in a negative way about the other in front of the children.
It can only be enforced by filing for contempt of a court order. |

No it isnt illegal, but it shouldn't happen. When one parents insults the other they are insulting half of who that child is. It is wrong and you need to discuss this with your Mom. |

Well, it's definately not nice...but I don't think it's illegal. Both my parents did that and they're divorced. As far as I know it's not illegal, but if it gets really bad, I think it could be considered emotional abuse. I never tried to stop it, just try not to listen, and encourage your sisters to do the same. Hope things get better for you, good luck! |

It's not illegal but if either of your parents go to court to fight over custody over any of the children and the kids tell the courts that "mommy was talking bad about daddy" then the courts will look at it as your mom isn't mature enough to have you guys. It's not illegal, it just looks bad. So tell your mom to stop talking so much or you'll be living with your dad. That's how my dad lost custody over my brother and sister. Now they live with my mom.

No. It's not illegal, but it sure as hell should be. I know what your going through. My parents talked crap about each other all the time. My mom still talks crap about my dad and he's been dead for almost 5 years. I'm just like, let it go already! |

no not unless the judge says so in the court order but even then it is hard to regulate. But it should be My mom use to do that and we hated it now that I have kids I swore that I would not do that. you can never change people just learn from their mistakes and do better in your own life |

It isn't illegal. However, look through your parents' divorce agreement; is there a clause about harassment and belittling the other parent in front of the children? Raise the issue to your father; and if he feels he needs to go to court so that your mother is reprimanded for not respecting her divorce agreement, then you can act as a witness. |
