Is it normal for a divorce lawyer to take this long?

it been two weeks since i hired her for a simple (no kids) divorce, she told me that day that i will be divorced in 10 days, well i haven't her from her since, i already called twice and left her messages and i went in today and nothing, her secretary gives me the excuse that shes not in? what can i do?? do i just wait more time?? is this normal?? the worst part is that i already paid her in full

Did you get anything down in writing? Usually a good lawyer will give you an outline of the services you can expect and a fee schedule. First of all 10 days is impossible without first having already filed. Second what you usually pay up front is usually a non-refundable retainer. They usually charge per hour and they will give you an itemized list of expenses used and then when your retainer is used up you will be accumulating a bill. When choosing one do not go by the small retainer fees because those usually charge more per hour and in the end you end up owing more,

One thing you can do is this. Write a letter basically telling your attorney that you have paid in full and they have not delivered and therefore you are requesting a refund based on breach of contract since its been more then the 10 days. Make two copies, Take a friend with you to witness what happens, Go back to the attorney's office and give the clerk BOTH letters telling her to STAMP received on YOUR copy. Then tell her you will not leave until you get the refund. If the attorney comes in be very careful because he can invite you to his office and then consider that to be services rendered. If you have not talked to him after initial consultation then there is no services rendered.

If anything that should get him started on your case. Hound them to live up to thier part of the agreement. In matter of fact his secretary is probably the one who will do all the work. Do not be intimidated. They will drag it out to milk as much money as they can from you.

Look up the Bar Association in your state and file a complaint against her. She should pay you pretty quickly if they get invovled.

OK - you already know - your first mistake was to pay her in full

I think your only recourse would be to hire another attorney. And sue the first one for the amount to pay the second one.
