Is it sad when a woman is disappointed in her engagement ring?
|
I've heard stories about women who didn't like the style, cut, etc of her engagment ring. Isn't that shallow and materialistic? Shouldn't they be happy the man they love wants to spend the rest of his life with her?
Big deal if it's a pear shaped diamond in plain gold band! Additional Details so a guy should propse FIRST then take the girl to buy the ring? I thought he was supposed to SUPRISE her with the ring!

It's shallow if anything at all. Yes...it's about the love the ring represents not the damn size of it. I hate people like that.
P.S. My man picked out my ring. It is not as big as my ring from my first husband. I love THIS ring so much more because he picked it out and he knows what I love...white gold. And my relationship with him is so much better. That's why I love this ring so much more. |

I think it is selfish to not allow the person wearing the ring to have a say in what it looks like.
EDIT: I would like to clarify my answer a bit, although I do stand by my previous statement up there.
I do not think that the woman should have to or be able to specify "I want this size ring with this shape stone in this setting of that metal." I do, however, think that the woman's preferences should be taken into account when choosing a ring for her. Arguably, it should be as close to "exactly what she wants" as you can get. Clearly some women have unrealistic expectations on what they want for a ring. My sister in law actually said "Do not propose to me unless youget me this ring RIGHT HERE" and gave a picture to her boyfriend. That is completely out of line. My husband, for example, knew what metal I liked, knew what kind of stone I liked, what sort of settings I thought were pretty, and he picked out my ring with my preferences in mind. He did not just go to the store, get what he wanted, and hand it to me. There is a difference between getting her what you want her to have, and getting her what she would like to have and to live with for the length of your marriage. |

Honestly I was a bit disappointed with my engagement ring because it was yellow gold and I would prefer white gold, but I have learned to love my ring because of what it stands for. I love my husband and knowing he himself took the time to pick it out on his own meant more. |

It is selfish, unless she told you 68 times what type of ring she wants and you were watching Sportscenter and not paying attention. |

Well that is something they should have discussed before getting engaged. I think this signals more of a communication problem, which means they shouldn't be getting married anyway. |

Yes it is shallow and materialistic. I would take the ring back and trade her for a more worthy woman to marry. |

Yes, it is shallow. My husband and I went to look at rings before he proposed so he could get an idea of what I liked. He went back later and bought it, I had no idea that he had, and didn't know when or where he was going to propose. It was a total surprise. |

No you know what sad when your husband never buys you one then after your married he goes to buy you a wedding band and ends up getting you an engagement ring on accident!
You know what else is sad spending more on drinking than what your ring cost!
No women has to like her ring if she does not like it then it should get sold and another one should be bought. It is a big deal she is the one who has to wear it so she has every right to wear something she likes. |

I don't think it is entirely selfish. But everyone is selfish in some aspect or another. I actually had this happen to me. I rushed things and just picked a ring. I kind of asked her what she wanted, but I never gave her the opportunity to show me what she really wanted. So needless to say, I got the wrong one. Honestly, it never felt right to me anyways. I knew it wasn't the one.
And it is the thought that counts, the THOUGHT, not the actual ring. I got her a ring, we got engaged. We are married now. Does the ring really matter all that much to me? No. She is my wife and I will do anything to make her happy. Honestly, she deserved to show off a ring she was proud of. And I plan on changing it in the future as well. The ring is for the her, not for me.
And if anyone knows women, they want what they want and no one can change their minds. It is easier to go with it, than it is to fight anyways. |
