Just another young soul writing about something I can't completely understand. What is love? A four letter word to clarify the way you feel about someone in one breath. I have personally come to conclude that despite the fact that so many people claim to be in this thing called love. It seems so worthless. If love is so true and pure and honest and wonderful as many speak of it. Then why do people break up and get divorced. To fall out of love with someone is to never have loved them at all. It is either there or it is not. I know what you are thinking... how can I question something that I don't understand. Everyday people live there lives with their significant other some with doubt and others with a heart full of hope that it will last forever and a day. People spend years and years with someone that they "love" and then one day you just wake up and decide "hey, I don't love him/her anymore. Why? This means that every single moment ever shared with that person up until this point is now meaningless. It was all for nothing. It did not mean anything it was all an illusion created by these thoughts in your head that have fooled you into believing that it was love. For centuries our grandparents and their parents have managed to hold their love forts down. What happened to our parents and what is going to happen to us? Just imagine, our kids and our grandchildren. I can see it now, the divorce rate by the time we are old. It makes me sad.

You're confusing "love" the verb (an action) with "in" love, which is just a feeling. They are two very different things.
And nobody just wakes up one day and decides they don't love their spouse anymore and want to end thier relationship. It's a process.
You must be terribly young or extremely sheltered if you actually believe that every moment of a failed relationship was a waste of time. Every life experience we have shapes us into the person we are and will be in the future.
You have such a negative attitude. I hope you clear the fog soon - if you believe in the worst, the worst will happen... |

You might be confusing love and marriage...and what they mean to different people.
Don't forget that divorce was rarer and much more socially stigmatized--there was a lot more incentive for people to stay in marriages than to leave them, even if they were abusive or loveless.
People fall in love and out of love. They are different depths and it's not experienced the same way by the same people. If a relationship is a flower, some would say that love is the bloom; others the soil.
People look for different things in marriage. Some want security; others ecstatic romance. In some societies, marriage is the only acceptable way to leave home, and home is hell. Some have a dream planned out and are neither satisfied when it all goes according to plan nor when the plan is foiled.
It is true that true love can leave. There is an easy way to explain this -- when people are in the world, they change a little everyday, meeting new people and having new experiences and new desires and new sufferings. Things become more clear or more distorted. You can tell someone that you will love them until you are dead. When they leave you, you have to, in a sense, kill a part of your soul, by becoming someone else through time and grief and life going on without stopping for you. |
