Being a military spouse is a tough job. I never married while I was in the military because I saw way too many problems with it.
EXAMPLE: Seaman Timmy leaves his wife and kid waving goodbye on the pier while we get underway. Now a day at sea is very much like the next. Months at sea seem like a week. So in seaman timmy's mind he still sees his wife and kid on the pier waving good bye. In reality timmy's wife has gotten on with her life. She took some classes, maybe got a promotion at work. Met new people, started reading a new book series. So when timmy comes home time has basically been stopped for him. Wife and kid are waiting on the pier to welcome him home. He walks back into his house after six months, looks around and says "you changed the furniture, lets go to the bedroom." No time has passed for him, but she is basically sleeping with somebody that is almost a stranger again. It takes a very different type of woman to be a military spouse.
As far as growing distant. Speaking as a sailor ( I don't know about the army or airforce) your life revolves around the ship. You are focused on work all day everyday. You think about it when your off. Sailors talk shop non-stop when they are out drinking. Home life is basically left up to spouse to maintain and run. If the spouse wants the sailor to help out, it causes friction. Because his focus is the ship. I've seen it alot. If you are willing to have a guy that earns a pay check, gives you tons of freedom to make descisions and basically is available for occassional family events, then you will enjoy having a military spouse. |
