Parents are divorcing, life is messed up!?

My parents decided they were going to get a divorce a few weeks ago. My grades are going downhill, and I am slowly inching away from friends because I feel like I wanna be alone more often now. I don't talk as much as I used to, and I cry a lot. I don't know how to cope, what to do, etc.
My mom goes to bars and gets wasted, and comes home and yells at everyone. She refuses to go to AA or Marriage Counseling. She doesn't talk to my dad anymore, and my dad is constantly depressed and crying. Seeing your dad cry is high on the list of Things That Make You Cry To. Ugh. When she doesn't go to the bar she sneaks beer into her room at night. She always makes comments like "I don't know why you're doing that, we're just gonna end up selling the house anyway."
The Divorce hasn't been filed yet, my dad is reluctant to do that. But I am almost sure it's coming. My life is slowly slipping downhill.
To make it worse, May 3rd is gunna be there 23rd Anniversary! I don't know if I should leave the house for the day to get away from it all, or stay there for supporting my dad. It's gunna be hell either way. I don't feel like the marriage is my fault at all, but seeing them like this scares me to death. I don't know what to do.

But about placement, my dad says he is gunna let my mom have custody. When she's not drunk she's an amazing parent. She talks to me the most out of our family, and we have the strongest connection. I feel like if she gets her own place and I live with her, with visitation with my dad of course, she won't drink as much. But she could also start drinking more because of the seperation. Ugh...

You are heading down the slippery slope of depression. You need to do things to relieve stress from your life and make your life happier. You don't want to let depression get a hold on you. Perhaps there is a counselor at your school who could help you. If not there are usually free clinics that offer counseling. Let your friends help you - they are your support system. Your mother needs help but she needs to want it. You can't help her recover if you're depressed. If you are old enough you can request placement with your dad when they get divorced. Remember, don't take on responsibility for the problems of your parents. You have enough to deal with from the fallout. Take care of yourself. |
