Regarding interracial relationships, does it all depend where you live?

The positive/negative attitudes on interracial dating is different in the northern and southern part of the US. I lived in Iowa (up north) for about 10 years and there I saw many if not more interracial dating than couples dating of the same race. Along with that, I saw many many biracial children. Interracial dating was very much accepted up there. Now I live in Georgia and I see the exact opposite. I see very few interracial couples. My husband's mom is from Texas and she is COMPLETELY against it. The few times I have been with her and she has seen an interracial couple she would say things like "people need to stick to their own race". So yes, I believe it is a regional thing. But think about the history of this country. The north was always a better place for blacks, more opportunities and less and in some places absolutely no slavery. Slaves tried to escape the plantations of the south to live in freedom in the north. The south was known for slavery and even in the 60's the south was the place of many race wars and hate crimes against black people. So it only makes sense that today interracial dating is less accepted in the south than in the north.

My sister is in an interracial marriage and has been for over 20 years. They have 2 teenage children. Yes, racists live everywhere, but some places are way more accepting than others. It seems ridiculous that race is still an issue. I really will never truly 'get it'.

It doesn't all depend on where you live, but location is a factor. In culturally diverse urban areas, it is no big deal. In a city with millions of people, everyone is too busy to get into a stranger's business. But in a small rural town where everybody knows everyone, a mixed couple is bound to attract more notice. As to whether that general reaction is good or bad -- I guess that all depends on the community's openmindedness as a whole.

MS. L is so right true racism is everywhere but how it is viewed is different and there is a north and south difference always has been.

It all depends on the way you think. It's your attitude, not everyone else's. If your attitude is that it's everyone else's and not yours then that's the problem.
Where you live doesn't matter because there is racism everywhere.
