Registered marriage in India possible?

Both me and my fiance are PHD students, in US. We are on F 1 Visa. Our permanent address is in Kolkata, India, but present address is in US. I have been here for a year now while he has been here for 4 years. Is it possible for us to have a registered marriage in Kolkata, India, given that our present address in not in India? Under which Act? Do we need to serve a notice prior to the marriage? If yes, then how many days in advance? Should we present in person to provide the notice or should our signatures suffice? Thanks in anticiptaion.

Listen why don't you both contact the Indian Embassy/Consulate in USA for your marriage (for your case this can be done at Consulate General of India at Houston) under the Foreign Marriage Act,1969, the Act provided for marriage of Indian in a foreign country. The permanent address will be what is given in your passports whereas the temporary address will be one where you stay now in USA. The passport of both of you are proof for address as well age, passport size photographs of both & you need no other document for the marriage. The newspaper publication in local newspaper in USA & in Indian newspaper will be expensive preposition other then that you require three witnesses with photo ID proof(their passport good enough) both at the time of giving one month notice for the marriage to the Marriage Officer under this Act who happens to be an official of the Indian Embassy/Consulate as well at the time of marriage.
The marriage under this Act in USA will be applicable in India & Indian court will have jurisdiction to adjudicate any matter in India in future. |
