Should I go on a cooking "strike" because I'm sick of being the ONLY one that cleans up the mess?

Should I go on a cooking "strike" because I'm sick of being the ONLY one that cleans up the mess?

I do all the shopping, putting away the food, cooking, and cleaning up after. I am not the only person in the house (4 others besides me, including an 18 year old stepson who doesn't lift a finger). I used to love to cook, but I have grown to hate it because I know I have to clean up the entire mess or it won't get done. Maybe they should just hire a chef and a maid.

sunbun, nice idea. But I do all the grilling too. For hubby to do that would require EFFORT.

edit: I am 100% with you Ms. GTO. I love cooking so much I was actually contemplating going to the Culinary Institute of America. (Was accepted even.. the whole shebang) Now that I am NOT going - long story- I detest cooking for the same reasons you stated above. Only I have my fiancee, his 7 y/o son, and my fiancees 29 y/o brother who also lives with us. So, I hear ya!

Any child over the age of 7 should learn how to wash dishes.

Any child over the age of 11 should know how to clean the entire kitchen, including wiping down all appliances.

Do you have a dishwasher? This makes cleaning up all the easier for them to do.

Also, you could pick three nights a week you cook and the other 4 are on your own, with the exception of Friday, which in our house is "order out" night.

My sons learned VERY young how to help out. And they bring in ALL the groceries out of the car...that is one of many ways family helps each other.

Write out some house rules for all to follow, and stick with them.

I'm a Riot.
I'm totally with Valerie. Our famiies are lazy because we allow it.

Not at all unreasonable to expect that the cook does not clean up as well.

That's our deal, I cook she cleans up.
I hate dishes and she hates cooking, It works.

Now, unfortunately you seem to be saddled with a bunch of men(?) who need full time mothering.
How sad.

I taught my sons how to clean, cook, mend clothing, and take care of themselves.
The women in their lives do not need to be a surrogate mothers.

You don't mention whether or not you've asked them to help in the kitchen. If you haven't, give them the opportunity to help. If you have and they don't, then a strike is in order. You should tell them what you're doing and why. Something like:

"I make an effort to make sure there is food in the house and someting prepared at mealtime. I don't think it's asking a lot for you to help me put away groceries, help me in the kitchen or clean up after we've eaten. I'm feeling unappreciated and have had enough. Effective immediately, you can cook, shop and prepare your own meals. Unless you're willing to help me out, regularly and without my asking, you're on your own." THEN STICK TO IT.

Sounds like a plan. Follow thru and make sure they know why it happened and that if they don't change or if they go back to their old ways ,. it will continue.

Strike! Strike! Strike!

Have them cook next time, and you can clean up. Let them know that they will be cleaning up next time you cook or that it will be the last time. Stick to your promise, or they will not believe you.

Cassie
If you have asked them and they have done nothing, then just cook for yourself. Then you are only cleaning up after yourself. They can fend for themselves.

The 18 year old is certainly old enough to move out....Yes, you should take care of any minor children in the house and of course your hubby. Perhaps you could prep meat for grilling outside that hubby will take care of.
