I am originally from New Orleans but currently living in CA bay area. My husband is attending law school at Berkeley so that's the reason we are in CA. I'm attending CSU which is great, but I am really missing home. We have no family here so it's been kind of difficult getting used to things. After we have both completed school I would like to move back to New Orleans, but my husband would rather stay in CA or move to NY because the money is better. He would end up doing whatever I want to but I don't want to move back to New Orleans and have him regret it. I believe that the money for an attorney in New Orleans coming out of Berkeley law school is pretty good. He thinks that the money in CA is better but the cost of living here is more expensive so it balances out in my opinion. Opinions greatly appreciated.

You're right, it usually balances out. I feel that it's less about money & more about where you're happy living. I live in CA as well but I'm in SoCal. My rent is ridiculously high & people in some other States would choke on what I pay & simply not get it. To me it's about quality of life so I deal with it because I love my area, I love living on the beach, I love the weather, I love the lifestyle I have here, and I can't see myself being happy anywhere else other than maybe Hawaii LOL!
Let's face it, the whole draw of CA is sun & sand which you guys aren't even benefiting from. I'm not a fan of the area you're at right now & I wouldn't pay these prices to stay up there. Same goes for NY. If you want the hustle & bustle & excitement of Manhattan then sure it's worth it but not if you're on the outskirts somewhere not enjoying the area just to make a higher salary. Do whatever fits your life. When I was considering moving at one point I used this calculator from CNN to see the difference in cost of living & pay.

Its the same thing with NY. They do pay better but the price of living is much more. I think if you want to live near family or something then why not move back home. Or you could think about somewhere close to home that isn't exactly home. |

The best advice I can give you is to research this together. Both take part in making this decidion. Talk about it, ask him questions, and the more you look into this issue together, you'll find the answer. Best of luck! |
