Son's Dad Moving Away...Any Tips on Helping My Son Cope?

My sons dad and I have been seperated for 4 years and his dad lives behind me on the other block and my son just skates over to his dads often. We live in Central Ca and there is just no employment opportunites. Half of my friends and family have lost their jobs. I am lucky I still have mine. He cannot find work after being laid off last year. He is moving in with his parents to Texas. I have never filed for child support and my son is very close to his Dad. I am feeling so sad for my son because I know he is hurting over this. This will be the last weekend for sometime he will spend with him. Does anyone have any tips on how I can help my son cope with this or any positives that could possibly come from it. Supposedly it is temporary, but we know how those things end up sometimes. Its odd that we mothers feel our childs pain but I need some relief :( He has a very rocky relationship with a woman (they are always on and off) and I'm hoping she can convince him to stay but it doesn't look that way...Has anyone been in this situation and did it turn out okay? My son is almost 12.

I cannot move, or I would lose my own job. Reconciliation is not an option either.

This is a hard adjustment for your son especially since his father has been just in walking distance from him. I would recommend that your ex sits down with your son and reassure him that even thou he is moving away he will always be there for him if he ever needs him, reassure him that he is loved by both his parents equally and let him know what arrangements are in place to ensure he will be able to have regualar contact with his father whether it be via phone, web cam, mail or visiting him during the school holidays.
Your son will learn to adjust especially if both his parents ensure that they let him know his loved and that he will still be able to have regular contact with his father. |

Well..You have a computer.. Does it have a web cam on it....
Hook up to one that his dad has..or get his dad one...that way your son can have live conversations and video with his dad on SKYPE.
For them to have a live conversation and see each other should help the distance not be so far away. |

Make sure you get child support this time for sure. You are not a selfish person or would have already been getting child support to begin with so don't listen to i8pickach. Why should she move where he is going? So that the kid can have TWO unemployed parents instead of just one! Dumb. Why should you. Especially if YOU have other children. The dad is plain chicken **** for doing this. I would take a fast food job before I would leave my boy. |

Can you get back with your husband? If not, can you move where your husband is moving? This is no longer about you. This is about your son. When he's 18, you can go wherever you want.
What a selfish world we live in.
Edit: Moving near him would require you to lose your job. For your son's sake, look for employment where your ex is moving so he can live just as close. We do what we want. This isn't about you. You can make it work. |
