Swine flu claims 149 lives in Mexico so far -- Are you afraid?

As a nurse, I will tell you... 99% of the media frenzy created around the swine flu is bunk. Yes, swine flu is a new form of the flu that works a bit differently than the normal flue. Yes, people have died. I would say less because of the severity of the flu and more because of the medical world's inexperience with it. The normal influenza virus kills thousands of people each year as well. No one takes much notice of that. The media is seriously over hyping this. Yes it's somehow gotten all over the globe. You know what, so does the normal flu each year as well. No one makes a fuss over that. Swine flu is a new strain of the flu that works a bit differently and the scientific world is working hard to get it figured out. Not stopped per se, but figure out how the virus spreads, who is most susceptible, what the severity is, etc. We live in a modern society today with tons of technology and we're going to use it. Past outbreaks of swine flu were incredibly different due to the lack of technology, treatment, medical knowledge, etc. We're not all going to die from swine flu. And people need to stop with the avoiding pork, wearing masks, etc. That's ridiculous. The best way to avoid swine flu is to practice good hygiene and to wash your hands regularly. Same as preventing the regular flu each year. Swine flu is a whole lot of hype. All this publicity, and what does the regular influenza virus get each year that kills thousands and thousands? Maybe a snooze fest of a news blurb about getting a flu shot. That's all.

Well because of the drug wars going on in Mexico, is another reason why trips are down. They are also closing the schools because children have weaker immune systems and of course they just want to be safe. I like the extra precautions they are taking for the children.

No I'm not scared. I think that as long as people take personal precautions to not spread the virus then no one needs to worry.

More people die from the regular flu in the U.S. (36,000) each year than the H1N1 flu going around now.

Although I wouldn't go to Mexico right now. The case we had here in my city was a 30 year old woman who just went to Cancun. She became ill the very next day.

I know pretty much what is around me and what I am around when I am at home. I wouldn't subject myself to it by traveling to Mexico right now. That would be stupid.

No one should panic...just be cautious.

Mexico doesn't have clean water to drink, let alone vaccines.

Here in the States your child has to have records of their immunizations if Jr. is enrolled in a public school.
And food workers have to have the Hepatitis A vaccine.

I don't think it's really anything for us to worry about.
