You can be the best parent in the world, and it may not matter. Even smart kids do stupid things. Peer pressure, excitement, and just youthful exuberance can be a nightmare. Do the best you can, teach them well, and keep as good an eye as you can on them so they don't grow up to be parents who drive other kids around drunk and such. |

Both.
My insurance company (USAA) long ago sent out a brochure of advice on what car to get teens. They said to get them a Dodge Dart (do they make those anymore?) People don't do stupid things with Dodge Darts. |

YEP. Its the parents fault. Every generation wants more freedom at a younger age, and since younger people are becoming parents, they seem to let their own kids have such freedoms very early on so as NOT to appear like their own parents who wouldnt let them do this, or that. Its getting out of control. Parents need to be PARENTS and not best friends. There has to be a point where you stop and realize you are letting them get away with murder. |

the kids are out of control because the government says we can not discipline them any more it's child abuse, so the kids play on that, my first 2 girls got disciplined [not abused] and they turned out to be wonderful young women, the last 2 boy/girl did not get to much discipline the girl is good but the boy being the baby and only boy was spoiled rotten and you can sure tell it now he's 16 and in that I know it all stage has a problem with authority. and hates anyone that has authority over him. looking back I wish I would of did things differently with him.but we don't know then what we know now that we are older and wiser. |

I raised two kids in a split marriage.
Both the biological parents, my wife and their father, hated each other. I paid for the sins of the father!
I loved those kids and I loved my wife.
All I could do was help raise the kids as best I could.
My stepson is a Cinematographer and my stepdaughter will receive her Masters in May, 07!
I haven't seen my ex-wife since 1998!
I try to remind myself I had an influence on those kids.
They both are fine human beings!
Have fun but be safe! |

I believe you hit the nail on the head.Way to many parents now days want to be cool parents and they sacrifice the parenting aspect of the relationship.A good parent will probably say no 9 out of 10 times to there kids request. It is getting real hard to raise kids today. It is nice to see that you might wake some people up with this ?.
God bless you and your kids |

It all boils down to parenting.... |

I assure you, liberalism is too be blamed for affecting people's minds and making them selfish beyond belief. Yes, of course it starts with parents. |

Well I hate to tell you this... but with both parents working now a days you need to remember that daycare has raised most of the children... then you have the parent that does not care what the child does or where it goes, the lack of dicipline is terrible, and then the lack of responsibility is not there. Parenting has greatly changed and is not getting better. |

I can't help but it blame it on econamy. Parents both have to work now and children are raised by babysitters or just raising them selves. People tend to express their love by what they buy their kids and not by what they say to them and things they do together. Its sad really. As far as the mother drunk driving and the kid being killed, I can't even imagine what I'd do to her if that were my child! It scares me to think about it. |

I think it is a bit of both. I can imagine how terrified you are, I have 3 kids (11, 10 and 7). I watch parents allow their kids to do stuff that might have been quite normal when I was a kid but now is just not safe. I remember being able to do homework and then get on my bike and play in the neighborhood until the streetlights came on. Not a chance of me allowing mine to do that now.
A good bit of the problem may be parents trying to be their kids buddy instead of their parent.
I am just going to keep telling them "no" when it is appropriate and am willing to be unpopular if I can get them to adulthood safe and sound.
God help us both........... |

people are evil, and it is so hard to be cautious of everything. try to know who your kids are hanging out with, and their parents. |

You cant generalize . After all no body hate his child and every body is trying to raise their children well. BUT, we make mistakes as humans and some of these mistakes result in tragedy |

It is my belief that with children the parents are always to blame.
How we raise and treat our children it the only influence on the type of people they become. I hear people complain that the schools don't do enough, the town doesn't do enough, or the state doesn't do enough. You child is not their responsibility.
The first child's parents should have know he was not responsible enough for the sports car.
The parents of the murderer should have taught their daughter that nothing in civilian life is worth killing over. Especially a boy.
The mother from the last case, should have known better then to try and play the "cool mom" by getting drunk at the concert. And sure as hell should have know better then to drive drunk. |

The parents are horrible these days in raising children. Most of this stems from children having children. How many teenage mothers are there? How many 15 year old are having children. How can a 15 year old take care of another life when they can't even take care of their own.
Listen to the music, look at the movies and television shows now adays. Sure all of that influences the way children act but it's up to the parents to regulate what their children can and cannot watch, or, can, or cannot listen too.
Children need to be taught right from wrong at an early age since children develop their personality by the time they're 5 years old.
Too many times parents try to be their children's "friend" and not a parent. Again it stems from too many teenage parents who have no clue how to raise a child.
Society is a mess today and I couldn't imagine trying to raise a child these days. |

I think it parents that need to explain to kids everything the kids will learn. If parents don't want to learn or anything or teach or saying ohh school will teach everything.. NO.
You know that My mom and Dad never teach me anything I had to learn the hard way.. Now I have my own kids and I am taking my time to teachmy kids what right and wrong and why! it the best thing int he world being a parents. If parent doing their job to watch the kids what they doing how the school, asked question about drugs and stuff they will learn trust you and talk to you about anything. that made the kids learn better way.
If pissy, mad, pissed off, calling kids name, not knowing what they doing in their lifes. and that made the kids far worst.
Every day I get home from work and Kids get home from day care when sit down eat dinner and I asked my kids how day care and they will talk about friends, plms, and everything. reason is that everyone in my family are listen to each other what we say...
If my daughter have whatever the poster on the wall some devil thing on it. I would not tell her take it down and throw in the garbage now.. I don't I would sit down and asked her why did you pick that one? she would tell me why and how she felt about that? I would like to know that all and if something not right and she told me and I would tell her and explain to her about this and that reason why.
Parents giving cars, money, fun, everything. wow spoiled.... reason doing that because they never sit down and say ok if you want a car you have to be good in school and stuff that fine but also ed them about don't drive fast, don't show off, dont say I know what I am doing don't neet to tell me. no, reason I am explaining to you and telling you becasue I love you more than anything in the world!
Parents have to ED their kids. If not then Parents had failed their kids period. why in the freaking world you have kids when you don't be a parents????? |

It's all in the parenting. If you raise your children right and hand them a gun and tell them to shoot somebody they won't do it. they will know that it's wrong and they will have the self confidence to be able to say no. I give my son everything he needs, not wants. Big difference! I do not spoil my son, he gets toys and things to play with and he pretty much gets what he asks for if he's good. Some people would call that spoiling, but he appreciates everything that he has and never throws a fit when told no. |

I think both.....the parents let the kids get out of control then don't know how to stop them. But it all comes down to the parents in the end if they showed their kids that they cared by spending time with them. And it is not video games and the music they listen to it comes down to parenting. And I think some of it has to do with who they pick as friends also and pressure from other kids. But parents need to talk to kids about everything. This is just my 2 cents on this. |

well lets see "monkey see monkey do" not only that ist so easy to keep things from parents now. And we can do just about any thing we want cause most parents are to busy to care. train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. |

I raised two boys, and in their teens they drove on dates and one son made money pulling cars out of ditches on icy roads. The younger swore college was a waste of time, but after working in a kitchen, he sent himself to college. The other wound up a doctor. I think I was just lucky. Have teens changed all that much? |
