with my husband who at times will verbally abuse me. Yesterday I was called a piece of s---. This is preempted by him not liking something I do and letting his anger build. He then yells and screams at me and gets in my face. Within a few hours he is sorry and apologizes. I generally have accepted and life goes on. This time I would like to not be so "fast forgiving" to see if he will try harder to control his tongue. This goes against my grain of forgiving and moving on. Any suggestions or ideas as to how effective this may be and how long I should not forgive?

Rather than play games with when to forgive, I think you would do better to address the root of the problem: his lack of assertiveness. His problem is that he goes from passively saying nothing about things that bother him and then going later all the way to aggression. Assertiveness is the happy middle ground where you talk about things that bother you. You two need to work on identifying when he gets angry or upset about something, so that he can immediately express it rather than letting his anger build. We already know that if he lets his anger build for too long he becomes explosive and abusive. So, the trick becomes identifying anger-provoking situations early, addressing them, and talking them out in a assertive and productive way. |
