Marriage is not the end all to be all. And when you have lived together 8 years, in most states it is common law anyway, meaning that about every organization/tax outfit or whatever would regard you as a committed couple. In fact, if you can prove it, and he dies, his half of your estate is yours. not his parents nor his siblings.

If you and he produce any children, he is still financially responsible for half of their support, married or not.

But at 21, don't have any children until you two are out of college, and into good jobs. And a guy really isn't dad material until he's 30 anyway.

If the paper is a big deal to you, you give him... the "If... then" proposition

"If we have not set a date, and are planning a marriage ceremony by June 3, (or whenever) Then, I'm leaving."

But hon, when you draw the line in the sand, and the date comes and goes, then you do indeed leave.

If you are happy together I wouldn't worry about being engaged. 21 is very young anyway. I know couples who have been together 20+ years never married and really happy. Are his parents divorced? If you see that or unhappy parents then it might put him off.

Times have changed, Why don't you ask him to marry? If this isn't your style then sit down with him and have a heart to heart and tell him you want a commitment. If he can't give that to you then I would move on.

I wouldn't worry about it. Since both of you are still very young. I would just enjoy the time with him if I was you. I mean if you are happy with him then what is the problem. You should focus on school if you are not with it. Enjoy your time because once you get married then kids came along then you will have no time alone. So enjoy

Given that even you think you might still be too young for marriage, wanting to spend the rest of his life with you sounds like plenty of commitment to me for now. Wait until you don't have that particular doubt any more, and then see if his attitude changes.

Hi hon! Okay, here's the thing... you don't want to force anyone to marry you so an ultimatum isn't exactly ideal. You want to be with someone who is on the same page as you, adores you, knows how special you are and wants to spend the rest of his life with you. So here's what you do, have a sit down with him and speak from the heart. Say here's my time line, this is what I would like to have happen in X amount of years. And tell him you don't want to waste your time (because your time is precious, life goes fast, doesn't mean to rush... just means to be aware) if the situation isn't going in the direction you want it to go in. Make sure you are both on the same page. It's okay to be upfront about the things you want, that doesn't mean you have to do it in an aggressive manner. You couls say something along the lines of ..."Babe, I want you to know how much I care and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, however I need to know that you feel the same, and if you don't then I deserve your honesty so that I can make a conscious choice as to where I want to go from here." And then you'll know, if he's not on the same page... it will be tough but you can move on. After 5 years if he still doesn't know whether or not he wants to eventually marry you, he'll never know.

u shouldnt push it. marriage is something both of u should want. trusttt me, u dont want to be in those marriage situations and ur hubby ends up telling u "he only did it because u were nagging". u will NEVER forget those words! sometimes men say ugly things when ur fighting. i strongly suggest to make sure both of u r done w school. i know ur probably mature enough. but if u do get married and move in together, ull never b able to go back. ur gonna pay bills for the rest of ur life and school is gonna be soooo much harder!!

edit to add: i say finish school, get a steady/good job. then start pushing it. atleast by then u wont have to start taking backward steps when ur trying to move foward.

It can be a lot of factors why guys don't think its important to marry after years of being together for years. In my case we were together for 5 years and not married I was upset about it will he ever do it ? He knew how important it was to me but to him we were already married since we were together so long but I wanted the real deal. And I was almost frantic cryin to my married and single friends aboyt it. And I always told him let's do it let's get married he said ok but never stepped up to do it . His parents were never married btw and he seen people get divorced after years so he said why do it. So I let it go and I was so hurt I criec .but after a few months he said let's get married no proposal but we did it we've been hitch 2 months. Tell him how important it is to u and if its not to him tell him to let you know and don't hold you back from some 1 who will marry you

If he plans to move in with you, then you won't see any engagement ring or commitment. Play hard to get so he will be craving to be with you. Just hope and pray that it won't fire back at you.

If after 5 yrs of being together he hasn't asked you by now then he probably never will...He should know by now if your the one he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

If you want to get married and he doesn't which apparently he doesn't then maybe its time to end the relationship and find a man who wants the same things out of life that you do.
