Don't have a kids until you are married.- 1 kid 19.5% of income 2nd kid 22.5% all of this is top line and is a killer economically. Boils down to you are paying 20k on 100k for part time access and I would look at the dude & say chump odds are you won't be the one with primary custody.
If you get serious start pulling up credit reports & pay for investigative history. A whole bunch of lies & half-truths are always stated early in the courting process and it's best to flush out any material inaccuracies & convenient omissions before you even think about getting married.
Set up a prenuptial agreement and both seek independent consultation on the matter. Get everything ironed out now before that $1,500 engagement ring (don't go higher than that) turns into a major financial loss.
Don't spend large amounts of your money on a bogus "fairytale" wedding. If her parents won't pay for the lions share of a sizable event (which is customary world wide) then scale that bad boy back considerably and spend less than 4k. Heck if your game is good & love is true screw the nonsense and just take a trip to the jp and get your marriage license then spend a portion of all that money you saved on a solid honeymoon. If your gal gives you any lip about wanting a "big" wedding simply state that either her parents don't feel she should have one or they don't place a great financial value on giving her away (use salesmanship here & put her parents in the hot seat).
Once married- Assuming bills, debt retirement (don't marry until her debt level is low or 0) and financial responsibilities have been worked out make sure you don't co-mingle funds. Keep separate financial accounts. This will provide her with independence (controls what she earns) and allows you greater protection in the advent things don't work out. Then I would tell the story about a friend who had 50k in a joint account which was frozen once divorce proceedings began (except for the wife's court mandated monthly allotment from it).
Have fun, love life and hey if you follow these steps you worked most of the hard stuff out before hand now if it doesn't work you aren't ruined financially and if it does what a beautiful thing!

2/ Believe in one and other, always and in all ways.
Oh, and don't use money as power- remember it is simply a tool to get you to your goals financially. Agree on a plan and work that plan together. |

You have to have open communication and trust. Also marriage counseling before you get married can help work out a lot of kinks for after you get married. |
