What are the advantages/disadvantages of marriage (as opposed to cohabitation)?

Advantages:
-You know you have someone by your side all the time.
-You can feel more secure in a marriage because there is just not "ending" things.
-If your spouse is in the hospital or passes away, you have legal rights, whereas if you are just cohabitating you have NO legal rights.

Disadvantages:
-If you want to end the relationship, you need a Judge's permission.

You pay less taxes and your car insurance is cheaper if you're married. You also have a longer life expectancy if you're married.

To start with:

When you marry you sign over half your stuff to your spouse and have to ask a court to let you end the relationship.

When you aren't married you keep 100% of your stuff and don't have to ask anybodies permission to end the relationship.

Well, one advantage of being married is it isn't as easy to leave, like if you're just living together, there is really nothing stopping you from just picking up and leaving. Unless kids are involved, nothing is really ever black and white anymore. I've been married, it was the worst relationship of my life!!! The only joy from it was having my son.
Now I'm with the man of my dreams, the one I should have married, but live and learn, right? LOL. Anyway, we've been cohabitating going on 11 years, I think it's way better than having someone say "your married now" . So what, today, that doesn't mean much.

I find you aren't so willing to give up on the relationship if things go bad as you would being bf/gf. Also you get a GREAT tax break. (LOL) I don't know I lived with my husband before getting married and I just love being married to him, sharing the same last name, having him as my husband. I see no disadvantages to it.

When you cohabit you can split any time. Marriage present obstacles to leaving. You might have to see a lawyer, you must settle financial matters and, when you have children, you must settle visitation rights. The idea that cohabitation prepares you for marriage, a sort of tryout, is false. Statistic show that marrieds who cohabited before marriage, have a much higher divorce rate. Being a lover, I can only think of advantages. Now, I have the best person by my side. She is my wife, my life and most of all she the only friend who would never leave me.

Some people get married for money. That is in their short term advantage.

Too many to list...do some research - there's tons of information out there. If I had to write a dissertation for every one of you that asks this question - I'd still be typing...
