What are your views on marriage?

Is marriage just a way to acquire another human being? By getting married and being bound to the other person, isn't this like being their "possession"? Think about it.... to "have" and to hold...'till death do us part. I'm not a skeptic or afraid of commitment. I just wonder sometimes, what really is the point of marriage other than to say he is mine and I am his (or vice versa her/her, him/him)?

Not to say that marriage is neccessarily wrong, or that I believe it is wrong, but what is the point?

***This is a genuine question. I am not looking for flaky answers like "because you love the other person or because you want to spend the rest of your life with that person". I want something I cannot refute. I understand that marriage is an institution or "alliance" if you will. But nowadays, divorce is as common as marriage itself.

The definition of marriage changes constantly. There are always reasons for such a long term commitment. As you don't want the typical sappy answers, let us try for the logical reasons.
1. Mankind, by nature, has a group mentality and therefore needs to be in a pack so to speak. Marriage, and the family that results from such, fulfills this need.
2. Legally, there is comfort in knowing that in the event of injury or illness, there is someone to care for you.
3. The inherent need to procreate and the societal morality of doing so, when not legally committed to the other participant, also solidifies the need for such an institution.
4. Religion and societal structure, has always mandated that some such commitment be agreed to so that there is distinction of th family unit.
5. I believe that the concept of love is due to the need to protect our strong feelings for an individual and in so doing, we create a need for marriage in and of ourselves. If we show a commitment to another being, we are taking on a responsibility to them as well as ourselves. It is a choice we make and by our forefathers making such choices time and again, it has become an institution.

Divorce is common because people are being unwise in their approach to marriage, or, they lack the ability to effectively communicate and therefore effectively work through problems. This ultimately leads to a build-up of problems, which then leads to divorce.

I believe in marriage as more than just a "legal contract". For me, it is a ceremony in which me and my husband-to-be are spiritually bound to one another, becoming one in spirit. That is how I see marriage, and so to me, there is a very big point to getting married.

For those who aren't spiritual, I suppose there IS no point to marriage nowadays aside from wanting to exchange vows and feeling more secure in your relationship.

With the divorce rate what it is today I don't think it's accurate anymore to consider marriage a bond that isn't to be broken. I think marriage has become little more than a public symbol of the commitment two individuals make.

From reading the Marriage questions here, it makes me become afraid of getting married. Seems like it's a waste of time, money and energy. Looks like a lot of couples are losing intimacy and communication. I'm not quite sure how I feel about getting married anymore..

its a wonderful thing to be married..but your idea of being your spouses possession is your idea not something i would consider being in my marriage we don't take possession of each other we are bound by law and love..

I think children deserve 2 parents who love them and each other. They deserve to be in a stable home. IF people choose not to have children and they don't break any laws I truly don't care what they do. HOWEVER, far too many children have suffered because of the irresponsibility of adults or poor choices of adults.

I don't think it's necessary. And no I don't think it's reasons of possession.

The broads tell me that you define your own marriage. So to me this means if wifey want to negotiate a side action contract with me....then I'm game.

EDIT:

Listen to these brainwashed broads: "marriage is wonderful and the ulitimate life has to offer blah blah blab"
