What do you think about teenagers marrying because of the military?

Let me say this to begin with: I have nothing against young marriages if both partners have gotten their education or have full time jobs and are mature enough to handle marriage and the responsibilities that go with it.
I get so tired of seeing questions on here from girls who are 16, 17, 18 years old and are preparing to marry their boyfriend because he is joining the military. Most of the time these girls have only been dating their boyfriend for a year, maybe more, and sometimes even that has been long distance. They jump into marriages because they're afraid of being alone and afraid that a long distance relationship won't work. They move across the country away from their friends and families.
I wish I could lean over and smack them. I was there a little over a year ago. I was about to graduate from high school and move to California to be with my fiance (who was in the Marines). I had convinced myself that I could just get a job out there and go to a community college - that I didn't need anyone or anything to make my marriage work. I look back on it now and see that I would have been miserable if I had made this decision. I'm so glad that things didn't work out, and we both realized that we were only getting married because we knew we couldn't work it out long distance. We'd been together 2.5 years by then.
What do you think about teenagers marrying because of the military? Do you think it's ever a good idea? Or are they rushing into it because they don't want to do long-distance?

I agree with you, and a lot of young military marriages end anyway. I work for a military university, and I am shocked that at 21 years old I can be on the phone with a 19 year old woman who is telling me all about how her husband just got deployed and she wants to come back to school...She shouldnt have left school! I just think its twice as bad as just marrying young. Throw in the added obstacle of military deployments, duty station changes, and lifestyle changes and its twice as likely to fail so young. |

Military or not, young marriages are not good. I'm 22 and if I did have the chance I would of said no. Too many girls live in a white picket fence and play house. Its not like that. Take work to make a marriage. They don't know what life is. Going to work everyday, paying bills without mommy and daddy helping them. They just jump when they see the ring and the little picture in their head. Im with you, young marriages head for a quick divorce. |

It's DUMB. I think they only do that so they can "keep" their partner while they're overseas, they're afraid they'll move on and forget them. It's a stupid thing to do if you ask me. |

Whats sad is alot of those girls are trying to escape from sad homes. They have low self esteem and dont believe in themselves enough to leave on their own or pursue college etc. Many have been brow beat and told they are worthless so long they believe it. They think their only hope is this military guy in a uniform who they fantasize is a hero. Just because he is military doesnt mean he rides on a white horse! But anyhow, they trade one set of problems for a new one but this new one ends up chaining them to their past when babies come along and they still dont have an education but they have a marriage that wasnt what they thought it would be. But sadly most people in this world dont choose to learn from other peoples mistakes they insist on making their own. And thats the hardest thing about being a parent or a friend to someone who insists on learning from their own screwups. Good question. you were wise beyond your years at the time huh?! brave, and must of had some kind of supportive friend or family at home right? |

I know of two that did that and they are both still going strong 15+ years!
Another one I just thought of ended after about 7 or 8 years.
Those are the only three I knew from high school that married and went right into the military! |
