Parental relation is permanent and can't be changed, where as marital relation is just a social contract and can broken legally. So I think woman should keep their family name even after marriage. |

Why not. It's her choice. If his surname didn't sound any good I wouldn't change mine either.
Why doesn't a male change his surname to hers?
Just because it was done in the past doesn't mean we should keep doing it. |

My son took his wife's name. I think they tossed for it.
Later note:
He's had quite a hard time getting his documents changed to his new name. In one office someone tried to talk him out of it! |

I don't think it's a big deal. I know that it was a pain in the a$$ for my sister to change her name and she still curses the fact that she did it.
If a man is intimidated by a woman keeping her name after marriage, he may have an issue. |

Why shouldn't they? |

I am planning to keep mine. I don't see why I should be the one to have to change. |

It's okay. Nothing wrong about that. Especially if the guy's surname doesn't match your name. |

It is the woman's choice to do so. I have researched family history for several years and one branch uses the woman's surname as a middle name for the children. It is a nice touch I believe.

Does it really matter?
I don't see a different. Probably there are mens out there who don't like it because they think changing the surname means something to the marriage, but that suit to the early days, we now in the 2000 years.
Woman - Do what ever you like. It doesn't matter. We will love you the same :-) |

I think it's fine, if they are well-recognized by their surname. It's very forward thinking. I also agree with the idea of hyphenating the name.
I took my husband's name when I married, but that was my choice. A good friend recently married, however, and her husband agreed to take her maiden name as his middle name, so they both have hyphenated last names.

I do not even know why a woman would want or agree to have her family name changed? Is it a convention?
If I truly loved a girl I would change my family name for hers. |

totally up to the individual....i changed mine back to my maiden name as soon as i was divorced, and my children also took my maiden name.....in marriage, its ok to do either, or double barrell it! |

i think it is okay. most women are doing that nowadays. |

I think it's strange and maybe a little awkward if the marriage is over because of divorice or something (but not if she was like a widow) but then again...from a woman's view I do see how it could be strange or uncomfortable to GO BACK to her surname you know? |

Some women like their own surname, because they are used to it. Or obtained a degree under it. have a famous surname like Paris Hilton - would she change hers?
Or the guy they are marrying has a surname that sounds
wrong with their name.
If the guy really loves the woman, he would agree with what she wants. But ideally the children should take on the husbands surname or double barrel! |

The question really comes down to what you call your kids- assuming you have them. If you have a different name to your spouse, do the kids take the father's or the mother's name? And would the other spouse be happy that they did not share the same name as their family?
A family name, one which you all share and are all proud of is so important, who's name it is hardly matters. |

Why not? Many already do. |

I hyphenate my surname & married name. I did it to honor my father. My family wasn't rich but my dad had strength of character & integrity. He was my first knight in shining armor. He always said the only thing you can take with you is your name. To guard it's reputation & it will serve you in times of want and plenty. It must have been true because at his funeral you would have thought he was a celebrity so many people showed up with wonderful stories to tell. Comforting me. Some people I had never met or seen in years.
My husband loved me & thought it was fine I wanted to honor my father that way. He hoped if we ever had a little girl she'd want to do the same.
But then some women just do it because it's easier to add on than getting everything changed. It's really up to you. My married name is so common no old friends from the past or even the treasury claims dept. would ever be able to find me w/o knowing who I married. ;-) |

I don't think it makes a difference, and can save money with her not having to fill out a lot of forms and change her name on her necessary items such as drivers license and bank accounts |
