What is an annulment?

I saw a show and these people were getting an annulment.and i wondered what it is

its a legal procedure to declare a marriage null and void...but unlike a divorce it makes the marriage legally to "have never happened"...like poof.

Annulment is a legal procedure for declaring a marriage null and void. Unlike divorce, it is retroactive: an annulled marriage is considered never to have existed.

In effect it states that the marriage never existed. My ex-husband tried for this. He had to go to his church, fill out quite a bit of paperwork, etc. and then I think the info was submitted to superiors in the church's heierarchy (sorry, not super-religious so I'm not sure where it goes from here) to find out whether the annulment could be approved.
