What should I talk about with my future mother in law?
|
We are spending the day together soon and I am desperate for subjects to talk about with her. She is very nice, but both of us are just more on the quiet side and just seem to never have much to say, which makes every moment together very awkward. What can we talk about that will create long, stress-free situations?

Get her to talk about herself. Ask her about her childhood, fun things that she will recall and think you are just the best future daughter-in-law she could pray for. If you know she didn't have a happy childhood, think of something else she likes....maybe cooking and recipes. Ask her if she will help you learn her recipes that her son loves so much. You get the idea. Be sweet and nice. Always remember everything you do nice for your fiance's mother, you do for him. |

Here's your change

Flowers and gardening, decorating, clothing, and cooking.
How about looking up ancestry and starting a family tree as a project together? |

Maybe "DO" something with her - ask her to teach you how to cook something that is one of your fiances favorites, go to the market together and buy what is needed etc - she will appreciate your interest and it is an invitation to talk about many things - who taught her to cook, if she comes from OS discuss how different food is for her in her new country etc, that way conversation will hopefully flow. |

Hi - that sounds good, a bit of female bonding.
The setting is pretty important; choose somewhere that is not quiet or secluded, somewhere that has plenty of other visual stimulation going on, so that you can pass comments between yourselves.
You could take a pack of photographs with you to show her; old family piccies, shots of you as a baby/child. Ask her about her past, including her childhood. Talk about your fiance and get her to open up about him as a child. Buy a couple of newspapers on your way to meet her; you could then talk about current affairs, even have a giggle over your Star Sign Horoscopes together. Maybe do a crossword together, if the newspaper has one in it (most do).
It's almost impossible to force conversation on anyone, it should just flow in fits and starts really. Make the silences comfortable by looking around you, or keeping ordering coffee or tea (if you are in that situation).
Good luck. |

just relax n be yourself, talk about making some organic jam, homemade pasta sauce and vacation destinations and your life, her life and just enjoy yourself.Let her talk about her son., When you are in the company of someone nice, appreciate the person for giving you your future husband. She must be delighted with you too. |
