When a husband decides to leave his family and his SAHM wife?
Find answers to your legal question.

When a husband decides to leave his family and his SAHM wife?

Is the woman necessarily forced back into the workforce? If both agreed she should stay home and he up and leaves, should he not be forced to continue paying for her to stay home? If she's doesn't have advanced job skills or education, her pay would essentially be paying for daycare.

I don't know the answer and it is not about me. I'm just curious.

yes he morally is responsible to take care of his wife and child, its bad enough him abandoning them without forcing her to leave the child and work, the court would order support.

No, she's not forced to, but it may be the best thing for the family now.

She will get 25% to 33% or so of his take-home pay for 1 ~ 4 children.
She has to figure out how to support herself and children on that money or she needs to work and find day-care (the cost of which is split between them.)

Alimony is a thing of the past, it was a stop-gap measure to support women whom never worked and never had a career and never had the opportunity to have one.
Your 'friend' made a choice not to work.

The best she can get now is the child-support and spousal support.
Most women use child-support as-though it were spousal-support, spending it on their quality of life not on the children. you're not suppose to spend it on your rent, food, nor clothes etc...
You are suppose to support yourself and contribute additional money towards the child-care, not be a leech on the money for your children.
Anyway, spousal support is limited to half the length of marriage and limited by his ability to pay.
If child-support taps him out, you might only get an additional $50 a month in spousal support.

The gravy-train is over - should have given up more bejers.

I think everyone should be responsible for themselves. Life changes, sometimes in crappy ways and people should learn to adapt with it. If the situation were reversed, should the woman be responsible for paying all expenses for the man?

I was the child of a single mother and she worked throughout my childhood. I don't consider myself shortchanged in the least because she wasn't home at my beck and call. She is a strong woman and she was still able to give me everything I needed emotionally as well as being able to maintain for me financially. We didn't have a lot, but we had each other and that's what matters most.

My Husband Rocks!!!
They both valued having a parent home to be with the kids as a married couple. That was a marital decision and why should they think the end could come? I think although we as women have this choice, the men should assist temporarily and yes, the woman should go back to work. I agree he should help to get her set up or at least within reasonable time. But by no means do I think he should have to fund her whole life. They are over. I also dont think it should be substantial enough to fund her luxuries but her home, electric and water is for their children, too. He should be helping with day care anyway because again, the children are both of theirs.
It should be reasonable, enough for a small apt or a trailer. Maybe give her a year which will give her a chance to earn a small, easily attainable degree and get applications out.
IF there are NO children, I feel differently about this. In that case she is an adult who was just simply not working, not just home to raise kids.

hepmom about to pop
The only cases I know of one of 2 things happened... 1) Mom went back to work right away (remember, your kids won't be in daycare forever) and 2) The husband paid for the wife to go back to school and then she went back to work. I don't know of anyone who still stayed at home, I think the cost would be prohibitive.

its called alimony. the man pays the woman alimony to stay home with the kids. if htere are no kids or kids are over 18 or out of the house then the woman will need to get a job.
