Who is more important--your spouse or your kids?

Why does one have to be more important? They are both important for different reasons.

They are both extremely important, however, if you asked if we were stranded out in the ocean and I was only able to save either my son or my husband, definitely my son. (my husband would expect me to save my son also)!

Spouses are for companionship, love, and growth. Kids are for training and providing for. Not that you should not have respect for everyone, but the role you play in your spouse's life and your kids life is very different. I think that role confusion contributes to spoiled kids and high divorce rates. I've heard so many men say that their marraige began to fall apart because their wives put their kids above them. Both must receive proper attention if your family wants to stay together. Kids are still developing, and need parents to help with that. Their opinions should never override authority.

Plus the kids tend to have traits you admired in your mate so (s)he tends to hve more of whatever that was that the kids have diluted by your charms and your vices..

I've read many professional opinions and most say that your spouse is more important than the kids. You and your spouses relationship, in order to survive, should come first. Of course, the kids needs must be meet as well too. Take some alone time with just you and your husband once a month or more.

This is the harsh reality and this is only if you have a relationship that is approved by God and on good terms. Many people often make the mistake of making thier child thier 1st priority. Your husband and you are ONE!! When the children are gone its back to you and your partner again and some people find that their relationship has "gone" bc their world revoled aournd the children and they are lost and have to start over again. It is my conclusion on why mothers are fathers start to stray in marriages bc they ar no longer getting what was promised and there in the beggining. This is also in Chirstian teaching, husband is first...As well it is a fact that when children grow up they should their parents and raise their own families...and their OWN families and children will come first. It is our duty to raise our children teach them our values and what we knoe to survive and let them go!
And people ask why the divorce rate is so high in this country! bc they have it back wards! did u see all the answers with "kids"!??

My wife asks me this question too.. and so far we agree (without kids) that spouse is most important... it may change later but I can't think of anyone else who is more important.

At least I hope my marriage will be with my spouse, not with my kids.

Your spouse is supposed to be first in your life, then the kids. Actually the biblical order is supposed to be God, then the husband, then the wife, then the kids. Though the husband and the wife are to be one he is still the "head of the household". Sure if you are in a situation where the husband is an abusive man then you would protect your kids and even get out of the situation by leaving the husband. But if you have a loving husband and you put him first...as you should, then you would not have to worry about the kids because he in turn will put you and the kids before himself. Makes for a very happy marriage and family when we do it God's way.

Your kids may garner more of your attention, especially in the early years but will eventually individuate and create new seperate lives for themselves. You should aspire to be with your spouse till death and so that should always be your number one relationship. Having loving parents who are committed to one another and create a harmonious home is the best gift you can give your children.
