Why are middle class Americans obsessed with weddings?

Why are middle class Americans obsessed with weddings?

For me, weddings are nothing but oppurtunities for middle class people to assemble and feign superiority. Marriage is a creation of ancient warriors. They sought to ally their tribe with other forces. But America has morphed marriage into a system of social control, and perpetuated the idea that marital unions bring with them a symbolic class status (the married couple). So why do Americans pompously celebrate at weddings, even when the event is put on a credit card? Middle Class fathers, who compete against the Jones' and engage in class warfare, refinance their house to the hilt just so Suzy Lunchbucket can be walked down an opulent aisle.

If a middle class person can argue the case for pompous, irrelevant, expensive weddings (which are put on credit cards), please indulge me.

I think your historical views of marriage are very narrow (Euro-centric specifically) and disregards the construct (both socially and legally) that marriage provides in our society in this day and age. Our concepts of our societal practices change over time, much like we as humans have, we aren't static creatures and our interpretation of things isn't either. Marriage is now a legally binding contract that offers each partner financial and decision making rights in the stead of their partner. It long been a life long blending of lives, families and responsibilities good or bad in nature. I don't disagree with your views of over extending ones self financially, but it is a parents nature to want to give their child the best and some people are willing to put that ahead of other considerations. Honestly, I found the weddings of my friends from wealthier families a little more brash in their usage by parents as means to create an image to hundreds of friends and business associates (one couple I know invited 30 people to their wedding of 300). The middle class tends to go more with what they're children want (for the most part), expect to invite family members and their close friends. Yes, to show off to some degree, but mostly to have them there to share in the celebration of the special moments in their lives (such as your child's wedding). Social creatures tend to be social.

Wow, why does it bother you so much? Let it go. There are a lot more important things (that actually may be your business, too) to get yourself worked up for.

Find a good cause to gear your passions toward.

Ooo May Day!

What's your obsession with the middle class?

Your logic is so soft.. You don't even understand the difference between a wedding (a legal ceremony that binds you in marriage) and a reception. Millions of people from all economic classes have weddings that do not cost more than they can afford.

And for those who choose to put it on their credit cards - that's their business, not yours.

Perhaps you should try investing as much energy into educating yourself about the real world as you do in bashing the majority of the population.
