Why did he say goodbye?

Long story short: this guy I dated last fall decided that since he was graduating & going to medical school, he didn't want anything long-term while I wanted commitment....Basically, over the school year he's still been in the same college town as me & I've occasionally seen him, however I only spoke to him once...all the other times (I'd be w/ my friends), he avoided me...

Last night @ 1 AM, I get a text saying "Good luck w/ everything, I'm gonna miss u..." Keep in mind, the last time I spoke to him was in February...he told me where he was going to med school & I told him congrats, that I wished him well, & that I will always have fond memories of him even though it didn't work out (because it's true, he was my first kiss). Then he replied saying that he would too, that I was a nice & beautiful girl, & that he knows I'll find a great guy & he was glad things were going well for me...

2 questions:
1) Why did he feel the need to say goodbye?
2) Why did he want to see how I was?
Additional Details
There are no hard feelings between us & I moved on, I am just curious...

although I have to say that I couldn't sleep for 2 hours because I started missing him all over again...

Break ups are always hard, no ez way to do it. Give him thumps up for say good-bye and not leading you on and caring enough to ask if you're okay. Now for you focus on finishing college and remain open for a new love.

He was just being nice. He wanted to end it friendly. I think that was his way of officially moving on with his life with the intent of not being rude about it. Be happy some people don't even get that.

Maybe he wanted to be friendly? He is allowed to ask and you can choose not to answer if it hurt talking to him.

Because he still cares about you, but not in the romantically committed way. He probably broke it off because you two wanted different things and he felt you deserve what you want even if that mean letting you go because he doesn't feel the same way.

2. He probably feels a little bit guilty about finishing with you.

Be glad that your first real relationship with a boy ended like this, with him caring about your well being and without any nastiness. That way you can always remember it fondly.

IF it's any consolation, it's unlikely you would have lasted very long after he went to med school. He will be doing so many new things and meeting so many new people. When you go off to college, you'll understand. It's a time in your life when you want freedom and independence from the past.

He sent the text cos he wanted closure in his own mind and he asked how you were to ease his conscience about having met someone else even though you hadn't seen each other for a while. PS no point in missing someone you have no contact with, and just because it was your first kiss.

Possibly his goodbye is not for good that is why he wanted to see how you were. Going to med. school is a lot of hard work and tons of studying; so, having a girlfriend during this time would be too much. Try to keep in touch with him from time to time and maybe your relationship will spark back. He will see how you understand that school is his most important thing right now and he'll see you as a future prospect. You have to let go to see if he returns. Don't be too pushy when you check in on him. Only be a nice retreat for him to indulge in with good times and no pressure.

well this is happening to me right now except im not going to med school and the girl is in the same school but i've noticed that the more i'm loving her its the more distracted im getting with my school work, and if he needs to say goodbye it maybe for a little while in my opinion he doesn't want to talk to you cause if he does he knows he loves you and its going to be hard to concentrate on his work.

why did he want to see how you were? well its because he still has feelings for you which won't/might not go away.....i hope i helped in anyway and i hope things work out the best for you, just keep in mind that if he's the right one for you nothing can stop it if he isn''t well God knows best

In reading what you wrote, my opinion is that he merely said precisely the same things you said to him back in February. So I expect you need to ask yourself what you had in mind when you said exactly same to him???

As for the time he sent his text, I would guess that perhaps he was "under the influence" thus giving him bravado in feeling it was time for payback.

I further suspect, your reaction to his comments, were possibly his same confused reaction to yours in Feb.......
