Why do arranged marriages have such a negative wibe?

I mean, they're not really bad and the work. Also, it's NOT the same as forced marriage or marriage of children (those are just wrong). An arranged marriage is basically when your parents arrange someone for you, and you (and your potential wife/husband) decide together whether or not to take the next step. Usually, you go out for 1-2 years after being arranged by your parents and before making your choice. So, it's like dating, but already knowing you got parent's approval and that you can choose whatever you like. Any thoughts?

Just wanted to clear something up:
- Traditionally, arranged marriage used to be forced and no one but the parents got to choose
- Nowadays (from the last couple of decades), it's basically your parents introducing you to someone, and then you take it from there. If parents did their job properly, they'll look at y'all compatibility.
- Just to clarify, I'm not talking about forced or child marriages since that's something that is wrong (on all levels)
- Usually this only happens when you're not able to find someone...

My great-grandparents on my mothers side were in a traditional arranged marriage.
They had 16 children - My Nan was the eldest :)
It was quite common back in their day and was still happening in the 60's and 70's with alot of their children and grandchildren as well.
By the time I came along in the mid 80's the tradition was nonexistent and I wasn't even aware that this existed in our family history until the late 90's.
Having said that, For people unfamiliar with arranged marriages the automatic assumption upon hearing the words "arranged marriage" is that neither person in question has a say in the matter. Many people are not accustomed to this tradition and just find it weird that it exists. |

i dont think arranged marriages are totallly wrong, whatever you think really but obviously forced marriage is wrong
The reason for the negativity is too many people think arranged and forced is the same thing..
Sometimes i wish my parents would choose someone for me to try get to know because aparently im crap at it!! |

I don't know maybe because they don't actually know what it means...There is nothing wrong with arranged marriages, i know of a couple who had an arranged marriage and are very happy... |

What you describe is not an arranged marriage. If either person can refuse to marry, it is not an arranged marriage.
What you describe is an introduction to someone, dating, and then both people deciding on their own if they like each other enough to marry. It is not an arranged marriage.
Arraigned marriages is the slavery and rape of women who have no say in the matter. If after of years of rape and slavery the woman comes to love her attacker, it still does not make the initial process right. |
