You should not give up possession. If you leave, it may still be your house on paper, but fighting for actual possession is easier if you don't move out. They advise this to the women too.

Women usually can find a way to force the man out and if necessary, provoke a fight and then call the police and tell them he hit her. Been there done that! The lawyer told my ex, that he shouldn't of left the house, when I asked him to leave, even if he had to chain himself to the floor. The house was in my name, I had inherited the place from my folks. Long story, but he wound up with the place anyhow, :o(. But he is now losing it, :o) he now owes on it more than the place is worth, after he ran it in the ground :o(. It once was a nice place! It's being repo'd by the loan company.

By leaving the house, the man could be accused of abandonment, and loose any right to return. And also loose a real bargaining chip later on.
