A married man who has previously had a bit of a fling with a woman 20yrs younger than him told her the last time he made out with her that she should be with some 20something yr old guy, not an old fart like him. She took this to mean he was creating a distance between them in a nice way and thought that they would probably just not end up seeing each other again because she lives in a another town, and he was obviously creating distance. She went on a holiday that he knew about and was getting back on Tuesday (which he knew). He messaged her the saturday after she got back to see if she got back from her holiday. She replied saying 'yes, but didnt want to come back'. He said "Why, did you find a man". She then messaged him back saying "didnt find a man but a guy did propose, but i said no!" This did happen but was a joke proposal. The married man never replied to that msg. question is, why would he msg her late on a Saturday night, 4 days after she got back to see if she got home from her holiday? And why would he assume that the reason she didnt want to come back was because of a man (she meant she didn't want to come back because she had fun)? Why is he messaging her (it's not like he had something important to ask)when last time he seemed to be creating a distance by saying how she should be with a younger man?

he sounds insecure. he's not wanting to lose you to a younger man, but acknowledges you deserve one. This is odd being that he's the one whose married. But, it sounds like he genuinely cares. Maybe he realizes just how lucky he is, but doesn't want lives to be ruined. |

I think he's insecure about the age difference, not simply creating distance. he's afraid she's gunna run off with a younger guy sometime and by saying things like that, he's giving voice to his fears, in a way that won't make him sound vulnerable. |

This situation may be looked at the wrong way. Maybe instead of trying to create distance, the man was trying to get justification to a question that had been running through his mind since they were hooking up: "Why on Earth would the young woman be messing around with an old fart like me when she could have someone much younger!?"
He probably wanted an answer to settle his thoughts and maybe make him feel good about himself and feel more youthful, which is what most older men want because that's the difference between being old and being younger, youth.
The man may have, instead of trying to cause a gap, been trying to feel closer to the woman by knowing her true feelings towards him. |
