To annouce our engagement my husband gave me a Beautiful ring. To annouce our marriage he gave me all he had left... his name.
You don't have to take your husbands name it's a gift. It's all about the mentality of how you think of it. |

Taking your master's name started back in slavery (any culture). Its totally ridiculous today. It only prove you married a dominate male who lawfully asked you to wipe away your family history and your life for him, which in layman's term...he owns you.
BE PROUD OF YOUR FAMILY NAME AND LIVE WELL BY IT. |

I never changed my name. There is no law that says you have to change it. And I have heard of men changing theirs. Rare, but it happens. |

They don't have to, but traditionally it's to identify people as a family. In the past, men have held the careers, bank accounts and dealt with financial issues, so their name was their reputation. Some things have changed, some things haven't. |

actually in some countries they dont change their names! And in some states (USA) its illegal for a man too! it goes way way back to where they had to give us a rib they think they own us now! BTW I never changed my name! I married and so forget that I'm not changing anything! Plus I moved to a coutry that doesn't change womens names! |

We dont HAVE to .. I chose to as a symbol that my husband and I are now a family. For me it solidified our connection, even though I know for a fact, married or not, we would still be together living in the same house just as we are now.. I don't feel anything was changed, and I wouldn't have wanted anything to change, it just stregnthens our bond when its "us vs. the world"
but seriously, no one has to change their name, it is a choice, the man can change his name too. |

The basic concept is that most of the times, married women are not endowed to have any share in their parental property. However they are endowed to have share in proerty of their spouses family. Even if a father in-law dies before he could write his will, legally the lady is bound to have a share in his property bacuase she is a part of his family. Hence her name has to be changed, to declare that she is part of this family now.
Men don't change their name because, since ages, they have never enjoyed any share in their in-laws properties.
It's not about recognization. When you are talking about recognization, I have my own recognization, but yet I have to put in my father's name with my name for all legal activities. Your name doesnot affect your social recognization. Your attitude does...

i think that woman feel more as one with their mate by having their last name. however i dont believe that there should be a law, if a man wants his wifes last name then i think that should be allowed. |

No we don't have to ! Chinese women do not have to or need to. We just get addressed as Mrs. so and so.
Our family name is very important to us. We got married, not change who our father is! I guess it's the same for other Asian women as well.
BTW most Chinese women do not wear wedding rings. Same goes for the men.
I am glad I am Chinese. We can also embrace any religion we want to and marry any race.(Can eat anything too!)
Now, how does all that sound to the other women out there? |

They don't. It's not mandatory. It's just traditional. Now women can keep their name, and men can take their wife's name, or whatever. |

This is going to make me unpopular but I've gotta chime in on this one. The answer is one word: Tradition. And to the person who said "because for something reason having balls makes men the more civilized gender" is the most ignorant thing I've heard in a while. Being civilized [or not] has absolutely nothing to do with name changes. Understand this: Men aren't the "dominant" gender and women aren't the "submissive gender. Gender roles are consistently being charactarized incorrectly by our culture. Just because a woman traditionally takes the name of the husband and is the nurturer of the family doesn't make her any less a person than her husband. By the same token making all the money, having the "most important high paying jobs" and being CALLED dominant by our society doesn't make men superior either. I saw a question earlier about why marriage is on the decline. This is exactly why. There's no tradition. Men and women alike are buying into today's distorted view of marriage and relationships and it obbviously doesn't work. I know some of you are shaking your heads but you KNOW it's true. Why do you think divorce is at an all time high all the time? Why do you think men cheat on their wives now more than ever? Why do you think marriage gets such a bad rap? Questions like these.
I'm sorry sweetheart but if you buy into this "I'm every woman" hogwash society is selling you, you're in for a long hard slog as far as relationships go. And guys, if you're buying into the staying single and nailing every chick you can and going to sports bars every night to pick up chicks, it's even worse for you.
Again, its' tradition. Without it or any knowledge of it, you'll never experience true happiness in a relationship..much less a marriage. |

It's history. Before us women had the right to choose our husbands we were sold or held dowries. So us taking our husbands' last name is a sign of ownership that has lasted into the present. What does it matter? Give the men their manhood. I say it's more for them, not us. Makes no difference to me. We take our daddy's last name right? |

You don't HAVE to change it, but I found that I like having my husband's name and it is the same as my son's also. Plus, it's easier to spell! I do know doctors though who don't change their name so that their patients don't get confused... |

You do not have to change your name.
This is by tradition.
Most woman in USA do not. This is because it is a big legal issue, if they are well established in the profession.
Some man do change their name. |
