Where they mexican? Maybe they were puerto rican or another hispanic nationality? Some people might be offended rather than taking the time to correct the person. |

In the last 5 years or so it seems that suddenly all humans especially minorities in America have developed an acute sense of feelings, which seem to be hurt more often than they used to. That's thanks to civil rights movements that have vulgarized the words like "hispanics" "blacks" "Indians" "Mexican" etc. What REALLy upset me though is that among themselves they call each other the worse names in the books and its just funny ... do it yourself? and you will get killed. but yet we are being called al the names in the book from gringos to Whitey to Crackers but don't you dare say anything or get offended. You have no rights to do so anymore. |

A lot of people are asking if you're SURE the person is Mexican. But I have know many Mexican people (who I'm positive are Mexican) and they are offended to be called such. I would assume it's because people don't want to be referred to by their nationality, but screw that! Mexican's refer to me as the "white girl" all the time! That's why I make a point to NEVER refer to a person by their nationality or color (such as saying, "that black dude over there" etc.) |

I wouldn't think that offensive if they were actually from Mexico.. I teach Spanish and send out parent surveys from time to time.. I get tickled at the parents who write "The children should not learn Mexican, they should learn American!" wtf? LOL... |

Maybe because that person is not from Mexico, and they think they are better than Mexicans or they hate Mexicans and wouldn't even want to be associated with them. Or even maybe the person you called a Mexican is a member of the Minute Men, you know the guys that shoot at Mexicans in the border. |

Are you sure the person was Mexican? I know many people from Central or South America get annoyed if people lump them all into one category like Mexican.
I don't think it would be offensive, but I guess it is how it is used.. Like if you say, You Mexicans! that might be offensive.
hope that helps..:) |

Say it Like it Is :)

Maybe the would be insulted if they were actually Puerto Rican or maybe from South America (evreything below Mexico) |

becoz that person may be hispanic/latino(a) and not necessarily mexican. or, he/she is just ignorant. |

I don't understand how this question has to do in the marriage and divorce section. But I would never assume someone's ethnic background without asking the person first.
If I'm curious what the person is, I would ask politely "May I ask what your ethnic background is?" Usually, I would tell what I am first and then ask them and they are more about about telling me about them. |

Well are you sure they were mexican..They are different latinos from different countries. Not all of them are Mexican. My husband is Mexican and if you refer to him as being any thing other he gets mad. Same as my brother-in-law from Honduras. |
