If one spouse accrues medical debt for nursing home care, will the survviving spouse be forced to use primary residence equity to pay for care given to other spouse? What happens when there is remaining nursing home debt when the 2nd spouse dies?

From what I understand, yes. If the house is one of the spouse's assets as well, it will be used for their care...

States vary on this. I'm currently dealing with this with my mother. Mom's house will be taken by state medicaid if necessary. However, if my dad were still alive it wouldn't be. He'd be allowed to keep assets up to 100K. Seems a little unbalanced doesn't it?
