I'm am actually hopeing i get a chance to go over there... Is there a way to volunteer myself... i havent even went to bootcamp yet so i'm just wondering...? how soon after i get done with "AIT" I'm hopeing sooner then later... And does anyone see the war ending anytime soon...? The one in iraq...

After you graduate One Station Unit Training (OSUT) in Benning, you will receive your orders to your first duty station. Depending on your unit, you may or may not deploy. At this point, the Army is sending everyone they can overseas to either Afghan or Iraq. I'd plan on going sometime. If you signed for five years, it is almost certain as an MP or 11B you will go.
The war in Iraq is winding down, but there are still more many soldiers in country. The role is more of a trainer than enforcer, but we're still the main targets. Even though the war in Afghanistan is as old as Iraq, the focus is shifting to it now causing a ramp-up of money and soldiers heading there. I've got about three friends who just got diverted to Afghanistan (they were set to deploy to Iraq). As one ends, the next is just beginning. |

the army did 4 years ago, not sure if it still does, have a option where instead of putting down your prefered duty stations (which is only waht you would like not what you'll get) you sign something that says mor eor less "send me to wheover is deploying next". as infantry you have a 99% chance of deploying... the 1% is getting stuck at NTC or JRTC playing op4.
honestly you can go anytime from within 2 weeks of getting to your unit to 1.5 years later |

ok well you have to finish AIT before they send you to your 1st unit then the chances of going to iraq by then are small we are schelduled to leave by august 2010. however the chances of going to afganistan are really good for you. good luck! |
