2nd World War Medals and their meaning?

My father in law was awarded several medals whilst serving in the 2nd World War. Unfortunately he is no longer with us but we are interested in trying to find out what the medals were awarded for, any ideas where or who we could ask.

You could try a medal/ coin dealer, or any military museum should help.

Many available online to check if you wish for a more detailed explination look on the MOD site for UK forces or DOD for us forces.

Mr. Bugsme
Call the Department of Defense - Records Department. If you start calling now, there's a better than even chance that you might get the answer sometime in the next decade.

You could check with the VA(.gov). My father had some too...Notherrn Africa/Southern Italy Campaign. Occupation Forces. Armed Forces Epeditionary...etc

You should be aware that 99% of WWII medals are campaign medals, awarded to all who took part in a particular campaign. This does not mean that no heroism was involved. I am assuming you're from UK. The US, for some reason, awards medals for getting yourself wounded.

Yes.

YOu and your spouse should be proud of his service to the country, and understand the medals he received for his service.

Here is the website for all the US Department of Defense authorized medals, that allows you to view pictures of ALL medals that have been authorized by the various branches of the services, going back to before the turn of the 20th century, even though there are no living recipients around now. Just click below, and search for his branch of service, and click onto the name of the medal to get a description of the meaning of each medal. Good luck.

P.S. There are also other medals that were awarded to US servicemen by other nations. Some US military personnel have been authorized to wear those foreign awards along with their US medals on their uniforms. They are included in these photos, just for reference. (Such as French Croix du Guerre, some Chinese medals, and so forth for US allies in WW2, UN medals for Korea and peacekeeping, Vietnamese medals, etc. But there were other medals not pictured here because they were so rare or little known.

You could contact the Royal British Legion. Do these medals have any inscriptions on them? are any of them star shaped? Star shaped medals were for campaigns in Burma, Italy , and North Africa. These were the most common medals given out. Then there was a silver round meal which was the 1939 to 1945 medal. I hope this is a help.

Many medals are common with those issued today, such as the War Service Medal.

Others, such as the Purple Heart, Silver Star, and the like are awarded for certain actions. To see what each medal was specifically awarded for, you would have to have access to his service record. Do you know where his is? You may have to contact a local VA office...they may be able to point you in the right direction if you don't have a copy of his record.

It used to be Army Records Centre, Hayes, Middx that would have the answer, but I think those records are now in the Public Records Office, Kew.
Or you could try the Regimental HQ if you know his regiment.

If you know the regiment or corps to which he belonged they will have a site where old comrades keep in touch..They very often have regimental museums and the like and I am sure you could get the information from there.

Just go to a VFW post or an American Legion post and you'll be able to get ALL the answers you require.
