4-year degree, but not an officer... (Air Force)?
Find answers to your legal question.

4-year degree, but not an officer... (Air Force)?

Okay, so I'm having a pretty big problem deciding what I want to do. I want to be enlisted no matter what, so I was going to go get a 2-year degree and go in as E3. I don't really want to be an officer... if I end up getting a 4-year degree, can I still just enlist instead of going OCS? If so, what rank would you go in as?
Also, would it be a horrible idea for me to enlist straight out of high school (this is what i WANT to do) and then later if i decide i want the degree, i could go back to college?

Yes you may Enlist into any branch of service with any level of educational credentials you wish. I've served with a SGT that graduated from Law School with his LLM that was simply bored with being at a desk. I have obtained my MS in Psychology since being in and came in the Army with my BS in Psychology.
Yes, you may later go to college after you serve as this is how I got my BS. I served 5 years in the Marines and then hit college, now presently serving in the US Army.

you are far better off to get your four year degree now while you are unencumbered by family and kids

if you get your four year degree you can go in enlisted and no one will force you to become an officer. my neighbor's daughter has a four year degree and in the air force as an enlisted man.

thank you for considering service to our nation, especially right now We need people like you

Lots of Enlisted personnel in each branch of service have Bachelor's degrees multiple times or even Master's degrees. Just because you have one doesn't mean you have to be an Officer.

yes. just having a degree does NOT mean you are going to be offered a commission. the Army alone will grant E4 to anyone with a 4 year degree. the Marines give E2 and everybody else E3.

while in you can use TA: up to $4500 a year towards college credits. you can also take CLEP exams and test out of credits. the AF also has their own community college which will help you get a degree related to your AFSC.

You do not have to go to OCS, it is actually very competitive to get in. Just enlist and go in as a E-4.

College degrees do NOT make anyone an officer.

They just allow someone to apply for a commission.

u dont need to have a *** Degree to go in a e-3...all u need is 45 credits...i say go enlisted first..then try and go officer...get the best of both worlds

It is much better if you get your degree first and then enlist in the military. Having a 4-year degree doesn't mean you only get to become an officer, nor does it guarantee it. There are plenty of enlisted positions in the US Military that's meant for people with 4-year qualifications. Enlisting before college is not a good idea.

If you have a bachelors and enlist you will begin as a Specialist (E-4). You will be in the same grade as a corporal except without as much leadership responsibilities (due to your lack of military experience).
