A friend's boyfriend joined the marines without telling her, is that his way of breaking up with her?

As Dr. Phil would say, "move on." You can stay as friends, but you can't "claim" him as a boyfriend. You hang out together out of convenience. There is already two strikes. Spending 2 years of your life together is a long time. Joining the marines is a private thing and a brave thing. It's always hard to say good-bye, but he is really not saying good-bye. He needs to do what he thinks is best for him. He maybe is afraid to hear the "unwarranted" advice. Support him or leave him. Support your friend through this.

He probably was already planning on it and didn't wanna go out with her if he is joining the army. He probably didn't tell her about it so she wouldn't have a chance to talk him out of it.

That's exactly what my son did. He was dating this girl (she was very pushy) She had declared them engaged,bought the ring, and was busy with her wedding plans. Upon his graduation, I was informed, along with my wife and Alisha (his Girlfriend) that he had jouned the Air Force and would be shipping out in 3 wks. Anyway, she bugged him every way she could while he was in basic, and even had planned to go down there (Lackland AFB) and get a quickie marriage done. He finally told her why he joined and it finally got thru to her.

(He said he met several other guys duromt the course of his enlistment that had jouned for the same reason...so it's not uncommon.)

By the way, he became career AF,and will retire in 2 years with 21 years of service, two trips to Bosnia, 2 to Iraq and 4 yrs in England.
He married a girl he met in Flolrida at his first permanent assignment, and they have 4 kids, age 9 - 16.

joined the Marines to get away from a women????? she must have been some uh, mmm, well, you know....something special. Probably it was a decision he was going to make anyway. You would have to be a little girl to think she was the reason a man would make a life time decision of joining the Marines.

I find it highly unlikely that he joined the marines just to get away from her. It probably had nothing to do with her and everything to do with pursuing a certain future. Someone would have to be a complete dumb@ss to join the military and endure what marines go through just to get rid of some chick. There are easier ways to break up.

parents send it, unless she knows his military address.

I wouldn't have even stuck around for the 2-3 years I wasn't his 'girlfriend'. Who cares if he's gone. It's better for her anyways.

Choosing to enlist in any military branch is a personal commitment. It sounds as if this young man was not committed to your friend. Hanging out with someone a great deal does not automatically denote relationship status. If he chose not to tell her, that is his choice.

It sounds as if she wants to have say on something or someone that she does not have a commitment from and vice versa.

I know a lot of Marines, many of which are recruiters.. no one told him NOT to check with her; however they probably did not tell him to check with her either.

As far as chasing 'jodies' I am sure she can chase away.. he is on his own path to further play out his future and she herself should find her own path.

As far as breaking up with her.. were they actually going together in the first place and if he did join without even talking to her about it.. then it is a crystal clear indicator that he did not feel that there was a connection. Intimacy and hanging out do not autotmatically require conversation about life choices.

If you should happen to run into this young man, make sure to congratulate him on his choice and should he make it through Boot.. please make sure to thank him for his dedication and commitment to our Nation's Safety.

yeah, he got what he wanted and ran. Guys will do that. What scum bags. They run after they get what they want. He now has an excuse to get another girl. He will ,most likely do the same to the next girl.

He sounds kinda mean.. and afraid of commitment. If she loves him she should tell him that he either straightens up and treats her right or shes GONE. Easier said than done.. I know..

I don't think he "broke up with her" , he might have not eve wanted to join the marines, he might have been drafted., or not.
