A substitute teacher who was a Vietnam vet said this quote, do you agree with him?

For one of my semester electives back in the school year, I chose to be a teacher's aide at the junior school. One day the teacher wasn't there and a substitute was running the class. Because a sub was there, I didn't have any papers to grade, no work to put up on the walls etc. So I had no choice but to listen to him speak. In a 100 minute block, he spent about 40 minutes talking about his time in the Army, the current war in Iraq and Afghanistan and other unrelated history topics. On top of that, the sub could probably give at least a 15 minute lecture on ANY subject (I heard he once gave a 20 minute lecture about ravioli). One of the students asked

Student: Mr. Potter, are you afraid of war?

Mr. Potter: Well going to war? Or being at war?

Student: Fighting in a war

Mr. Potter: If you're completely unafraid of fighting in a war, I'd think you're quite insane.

Do you agree with him?

He is correct.If you say your not afraid of going into battle,you either dont give a s..t or are a loon. That attitude will get you and your fellow soldiers,marines,sailors and airman killed.

Having done it i know you are always afraid, it is how you handle that fear that is the mark to be measured...

It is a natural human instint, to not have it points to something wrong.....

if someone isn't afraid of fighting a war... something is loose inside. it's only natural to be afraid, especially if you know the outcome of what could happen.

Once the fear component is removed, a person takes chances that not only endanger themselves, but that of fellow commrades.

I would much rather have a "buddy" that is scared sh%!less then one who wants to charge at everything.

Had quite a few WW II and Korean War vets as teachers and substitute teachers, and those who would talk about the war pretty much echoed the same sentiments.

He is correct. Fear is a good thing to have - it keeps you focused on the task at hand. Managing fear is a necessity to being a good soldier and leader.

It's natural to be afraid, our instinct is self preservation and putting yourself in harms way runs counter to that. Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather controlling it not it controlling you. At the end of the day when you go outside the wire and come back you're just an ordinary guy and while you may want action, there is sometimes a part of you that just wants another boring patrol.

just remember anybody has been a war the last thing they want is another war if you can work it out like talking which is preferred way . stupid things they say about McCain ,he probably hates war more than anyone else .war is the last the very last thing you should do .

well if you're not scared at first then yes. but some troops that have been in combat many times lose the fear. Many people say that when this happens it's a sign that you've been in the armed forces too long. I agree. It's kinda like if you ride a roller coaster 100 times then you lose the fear.

to survive war you have to become war, eat,and sleep it. If you can do this you are unafraid of fighting in a war, if you die you die. How ever nobody should ever want to go fight a war. It is easy er to learn these things then it is to forget them. Have a nice day
