As of right now, the ME rating has all four of their Master Chiefs in place, and we've just completed their Performance Qualification Sheets (PQS) (job requirements for advancement). As of 01 January 2010 the rest of the rating will be stood up, and we'll start an A School (advanced training school or 'tech' school). This summer the Coast Guard will be accepting requests for folks already in to cross over to ME, so all the rates from E-8 down to E-4 will be staffed. We're already prepped to set up the ME service-wide exam (advancement test) and by 01 January we'll be ready to go.

To clarify what the previous answerer said, the reserve Port Security Specialist (PS) rating will be going away, and all the reservists that are in the rating will be reclassified into another rating, depending upon their qualifications and their wishes.

All in all, ME seems like a pretty cool rating!

Only heard from a Coast Guard recruiter that it is supposed to be rolling out spring or summer of next year and it will be replacing the PS (Port Security) rating, and PS is being phased out and I think PS guys now can transition into it (not 100 percent sure on the last statement, I think they will get an option of what they do but im just a civi)
