when i left the service i remember there were two camps on this. one saying that the possibility of a misfire combined with the sound of the bolt sliding forward could compromise the ambush...others being more optimistic and saying that the first thing to roll out the red carpet should be the machine gun.

The ambush should be initiated with the most casualty producing weapon, regardless of what it is. If everyone has M16's except for a couple of SAW gunners, then it should be initiated with the SAW's.

most casualty producing weapon is correct. What you want to remember is that machine guns are open bolt fired weapons and run a risk of misfiring due to failure to feed on the first trigger pull. A closed bolt weapon will fire more reliably.

When I was in we carried M1 Garands and B.A.R.s, with the officers carrying M1-A2 carbines. Of course we never did a single weapon ambush, therefore all weapons were used. Then again, we old Marines never did play fair or do anything half arsed.

I thought the USA military sent in the drones first followed by unman missiles followed by extensive air bombing while my mob drop short the lot with artillery, then the ground troops attack backed by tanks and unit fire support. The other is for SAS to find, identify then hide and then shoot the crap out of the enemy at the most convenient time. Then if it is a platoon strength engagement then sure use machine guns, rocket launchers and even the kitchen sink if you have too and let go the lot and then mop up. When in enemy territory always have one up the spout at the ready.
