I'm currently in the Army National Guard. I'm 18, MOS is 11B (Infantry)and is waiting AIT. The Question I'm asking is... what is the better option.... Going to College while still in the National Guard or Just go Active Duty.
Reasons why i want to go to Active.
Economy's Bad, Can't find a job, Steady paycheck, Travel, Seeing the world in a different view.
Reason why I want to go to College...
Family issues, Help mom and dad and handicap nephew (has cerbal palsy), Getting an education, seeing the same people, Going to Drill, Living with Mom and Dad and caring for them practically...

Not sure anyone can really answer this for you but I can tell you my path.
I joined the Navy right out of high school and did four years active duty. In that time I did 2 six month Mediterranean cruises, saw a dozen countries and earned the GI Bill.
After my four years, I got out, got a degree. Now I am back in as a reserve officer and am an electrical engineer at a nuclear power plant.
To be honest, I think that enlisting after high school was the best thing I could have done and has really set me up for success.

I would try to go AF...More of a chance to go to college while doing your job also. However, army does have more bases for you to have the ability to be stationed at. I just know that infantry doesn't stay home as much as most would desire...I don't know good luck...Money and college was the reason i joined the AF |

ill answer this straight forward for you. the whole "Seeing the world in a different view" is crap in my opinion. you're not thinking that when getting shot at in iraq. 'oh wow, look at those pretty birds'
army is great to make a career out of. you do get a steady paycheck. not a whole lot of time for travel in the infantry.
to make it better, dont join the infantry. join an easier MOS. you get the same benefits. be SURE you want infantry before you sign anything and remember, its 8 years total. 4 in, 4 IRR.
go in the army, do your time, get the GI bill, get out of the army, DONT REENLIST, and go to college for free. |

My thought would be to go to College and remain in the national guard - pursue a commission while in college. Then your college expenses will be minimized and you have a much better prospect to join the regular military when you graduate - more importantly you will be an officer. |

college is better for the long run, but money is always good, especially in this economy.
It is a personal choice. No better time to go active than when you are young and unattached in the way of a wife and kid. You can always get your college in (some now, and some after you finish).
If you have they money, do it now and become an officer. Better money. |
