Air Force Basic Training?
|
My husband is leaving for basic training next month and I was wondering what sort of things will he be doing while hes down in Texas?
details please.
and am i able to give him a calling card so he can use it instead of calling collect?
can we mail each other letters while hes away?
and is there any tips that a recruiter probably hasn't already told him?
he's always talking about getting himself in a set schedule..like going to sleep early and waking up as if he were already there...
is this a good idea? and will it work to his advantage? Additional Details also, i would like to know if it would be possible if i could stay at the hotel on base when i go down there for his graduation?.

my fiance graduated from air force bmt this past january. here is a link that you and your husband can look at: http://www.airforcebasic.com/ it is broken down by each week. there used to be about 6 weeks for bmt, but now there is 8 and a half. the link i have provided only is the 6 week schedule. it is about the same though. i tried looking for the web site that i always looked at to see what my fiance was up to but i can't find it. whenever you have time you can always google for information. im sure you will be able to find something.
yes, you can mail each other letters. after about a week, he will be able to mail you information that contains his address. from then on, please do send him letters. i wrote to my fiance almost every day. don't make them too long though because they only get a certain amount of time each night to read them. but getting letters/cards is a very good thing. it keeps them focused and make sure to stay positive. it's okay to say you miss them but they are already having a hard enough time with all the stress and pressure, don't make it more complicated. they can't do anything about it anyway. getting letters from home is always a very good thing :) but, like the phone calls, you never know when you will get a letter. he will be able to write when they say he can write. i only got two letters the entire two months that my fiance was in. but i did get more phone calls than that :) he will get yours though. the won't hold them. they will give them to him. btw, you cannot send care packages though.
as for tips, you never really know with that. he could have gotten a very honest recruiter. like i said earlier, if you have time, you or him or even both of you can look information up online. i actually have my fiance's workbook. so i can always look things up and let you know if you would like.
it is a very good idea to try getting into a set schedule. they get up about quarter to 5 and go to bed at 9. it will work to his advantage. he will be ahead of the game a little bit versus the people who all the way up to leaving for bmt they slept all morning and were up all night.
yes, you should be able to stay at a hotel on base. i was very lucky, the hotel i stayed at was just across from my fiance's dorm thing. it was very cool. we got to listen to them in the morning do pt. you might be able to get a discount because you are already married, therefore you are in a sense, part of the air force too. just try making reservations asap. some hotels will not do reservations though. they just do space available. so if they are open they will take you in. otherwise if getting a hotel room on base doesn't work, then you can easily get a hotel close by right off base. on base though, is better. he will get some days to be able to go off base and see the attractions and other days where he has to stay on base. if you have a room on base, then you guys can be alone and hang out together without worrying about him possibly getting into trouble. (they technically are not supposed to show any sign of affection really while they are in uniform... and they will be in uniform the entire time. my fiance got in trouble because he was hugging me. yeah, b.s.)
i know i wrote a lot but it is all good information to know and it might be easier to understand if it comes from someone who went through it. especially just a couple months ago. if you want to know anything else, just let me know :D
hope this helps!

yes, you can give him a calling card so he can call you. he can only call when they say he can. you cannot call him. you never know how long he can be on the phone with you either. he usually will just get one chance to call you and if you are home then that is great but if you are not then all he can do is leave a message. he may only get a couple minutes to about 20 minutes. there really is no way of telling. he can earn minutes to call home if he does well and if everyone in his squadron is doing things like they are supposed to. if one does something wrong, they usually all have to deal with the consequence. |

Your husband will be running everyday, going to class, marching, getting yelled at, making his bed to perfection, taking showers with 20 other men, eating his meals in 30 seconds or less and getting yelled at some more.
Yes, you can mail letters.
Tips - dont volunteer for anything
He wont be able to go to sleep early, its not allowed.
Yes, u can stay at the hotel on base for his graduation. |

The first, and about the only thing, your husband should be doing is pushups, situps, and running to prepare for basic training. The waking up early and all that jazz won't do any good. There's a level of tiredness that will just overtake you at basic. You'll go to sleep and wake up when they want you too.
Each day he'll go through physical training and educational training. He'll learn all the rules, customs, courtisies and ways of general Air Force life. He'll learn how to carry an M-16, march, salute, and just everything.
Yes, he can take a calling card...highly encourage that. And yes, you can write him...and when he gets a chance he'll write you, but don't expect him to write that much. There's very little personal time and usually it's at the end of the day and you're so exhausted you just want to sleep. I would encourage you to write him everyday...even if it's just a post card. Mail Call is awesome. You can send him pictures, but NOTHING graphic, he will get in trouble.
Tell him to ask his recruiter if anyone is doing RAP soon. Recruiter Assistance Program (RAP) is where Airmen who have graduated basic and tech school take a week to go back and work with/for their recruiter. It's like getting to work at home for a week before going onto the permanent duty station. Those are the Airmen he'll want to talk to about basic training and tricks to get through it.
I doubt you'll be able to get a hotel room on-base. Lackland is huge and normally always full. You can check, but don't set your hopes on it. You can get a hotel close to the base and get a rental car. |
