My husband is entering the AF as an enlisted airman 1st class. My question is... he has a doctorate (Ph.D.); can he use the title of "Doctor" on any military desk plates, business cards? Also, is it acceptable to use the "Doctor" title in social and or professional situations? Other military Officers with Ph.D.'s and doctorates, i.e. lawyers, physicists, physicians, and scientists use the "doctor" title. Just wandering if the Enlisted sect would allow this.
Additional Details
Also, could he do the following...
"A1C John Smith, Ph.D." on his desk plates and or business cards?

If I worked with your husband and he was an E-3 and I knew he had a Ph.D. I would not call him a "Doctor" because he's not serving in that capacity. It may be acceptable to use "Ph.D" on his business card. But if he ran around his unit spouting that he was a Ph.D., that sets a dangerous tone. Not because he hasn't earned it, but because he's basically telling everyone that he's better than them and he should be treated better, despite his short time in the service. Even if that's not his intent, that's the perception, and that becomes reality. Once you wear the uniform, time in counts a whole lot more than pieces of paper.
Other military officers serving as lawyers, physicists, and scientists use the title because that's their profession. If your husband is an E-3, he's an airman, and not serving as a professional in his educated field.
To answer all of your questions in a nutshell, if he is performing "doctoral" work then he's a "doctor," if he's performing airman work he's an airman.
Side note - why not choose officer field or an advanced technical rating with critical codes/MOS? He can jump to E-5 in a few short months or years if he plays it right and chooses a good program. |
