I'm interested in going to Airborne school or Air Assault school but I don't know as much as I'd like about Air Assault. I hear they don't do quite as much running as Airborne and they do a lot more ruck marches and repelling; is that true? What else can you all tell me?

Dude, this is a LONG answer. Air Assault school is 10 days long and is much more physically intensive than Airborne School. AA is more mentally intensive as well due to the phases which you must pass. Yes, you'll have 3 or 4 ruck marches...sorry, been a while. The final Ruck being a 12 miler which you must complete in 3 hours or less to get a GO. The two things that knock people out are the obstacle course, which is timed, and sling load phase. Sling load phase is where the cadre have different vehicles ready for lift by helo and you have to inspect and find discrepancies within the line. It's timed and I saw at least 5 or 6 fail out of that particular phase due to missing discrepancies. Yes, there is a rappelling phase as well.
Airborne School takes balls and that's about it. You do some running and learn how to fall for 2.5 weeks. Several units use Air Assault as a means of insertion/extraction. Airborne Units are specialized and elite. I've got several Soldiers I've sent through Air Assault school while I've been a Platoon SGT here at Ft. Bragg. Get both schools. Best of luck! |

Only very specific units do airborne ops... all light units (including airborne) will do some form of air assault mission or training. I would get airborne (parachute) in my contract if i were you, then start asking for air assault after that. |

If you want Airborne, get it in your contract. It is 3 weeks long plus a 'zero' week (really 3 1/2 to 4 weeks).
Air Assault is 10 days. They run and do a 12 mi. ruck march as a graduation requirement. You are tying knots and learning to direct helicopters, so there is more of a mental challenge. Some say Air Assault is tougher, but it is less than 1/2 as long. |

Ive been to both and I definitely recommend going to airborne school first. To me airborne school was a lot more fun.
Air assault is broken down into three phases. The first phase is classroom, the second phase is slingload operations, and the third phase is rappelling. Air assault is both mentally and phsically challenging. We started with about 200 people and only graduated with about 130.
I recommend going to both, but go to airborne first. It is a lot more fun and you are basically guaranteed to graduate. |

my dad was both airborne is fun and yes they do some running.
air assualt is mainly reppeling from helicopters and stuff you can go airborne and when your ready request air assualt at your unit.
